I have an ASUS notebook about 5 years old that loses wifi connection every 2 or 3 days and cannot get it to connect back up without restarting the router.

This is at work that it does this. Seems to work fine everywhere else. The router here is a brand new Linksys bad boy router. Everyone else's laptops and all of our phones have no issue.

Just my computer and I recently noticed that the ASUS laptop on our alignment machine does the same thing as mine. Both are running Windows 7.

Is there some setting on the network adapter I need to change on these older laptops so it won't do that. I'm getting tired of having to restart the router 2 - 3 times a week and EVERY Monday morning.

A couple of thoughts. First, check to see if there is a BIOS update from ASUS. Second, take a look at your device manager (Network Adapters) and see if you can determine the manufacturer of the wifi device then look at the driver date. See if there is an updated driver for the device, either on the Asus web site or through an internet search. Third, again from device manager, click on the wifi driver and go to properties. Click on the Power Management tab and uncheck the box that says "Allow computer to turn off this device..."

    Good luck.

      Already did that last thing.

The driver says it's up to date.

            Hey Greg,

You say you have to restart the ROUTER? The laptop is at work..does it stay at work or is it being taken home? Is the laptop being just placed in Standby-Sleep mode/lid shut when you leave work IF it's staying at the job location?

Have you tried RESTARTING the laptop instead of the router??

I have an old Vista Laptop that occasionally would loose it's link with the Router when I would shut the lid and let it go into standby. I have since been just laying it on it's side with the lid open, the screen eventually goes black, but the laptop doesn't go into standby/sleep mode, and I haven't lost router wireless synch for quite some time now. I know it's a bandaid approach, but was the least hassle I could muster at the time. After reading what Jerry had posted, I'll probably check some of the power saving settings for it to see if that makes any difference.

When it did loose synch, I would run the troubleshoot, it would first try to attain/refresh the IP address, it would fail, then would try resetting the wireless card, would say fail, repeat IP and again Reset Wifi Card, and it would usually make a proper connection the 2nd time.

With regards to the BIOS, have you first checked the BIOS/go into the Bios and verify the laptop's model designation as well as the Mobo model and BIOS version to ensure that you acquired the correct BIOS from the ASUS site??

Yes I have tried restarting the computer and the troubleshooter. The troubleshooter restarts the wireless adapter but it still won't connect. When it goes the only way to re establish connection is to restart the router.

I have also tried an external USB wireless adapter. Same-same.

My laptop stays at work during the week and I just close the lid and put it to sleep but it still loses connection every 2 or 3 days. It will be disconnected when I wake it up. It goes home with me on the weekends. I turn it off before transport and then can't connect when I start it up on Monday. Works fine at home or anywhere else I might carry it.

This is the same laptop I carry with me on trips and it has no problem connecting up all over the map.

Stereomind, who is a computer tech, accessed my computer remotely today and updated my adapter. He said Microsoft was a little behind on those updates. We'll see what happens.

Your router sounds like it is having problems handing out IP addresses.
Check the number of active connections on the router and compare that with the range (quantity) of IP addresses allowed to be handed out.
                i.e.
If the DHCP pool is for 5 connections and your connection is #5, but doesn't get release back into the pool...
The router has no more connections/IPs to hand out.
A router restart would flush bad/stale connections.

Easy way to validate is to increase the DHPC IP pool.

I think your router is having carb problems...

Then why would BOTH ASUS computers have the same issue? The one on our alignment machine is shut completely down after each use.

Either both laptops are identical hardware and configuration or it is the router .
I still think the router is the failure point.
Does the router need a firmware upgrade to play with the win7 Asus laptops?
Try assigning an unused ip address to one of the laptops.
Use one not in the router dhcp pool.
The laptop that never leaves the office is a good candidate for the test.

A Google search for issues with "bad boy router" is unhelpful.

So that is a dual band router - not MY favorite.
Multi-band radio negotiation and stability can be dicey

From the pic of the label you have a Version 1.
The current firmware for V1 is:
                            Code:
                            Ver.1.1.10.167514
                            Latest Date: 06/30/2015
What is your router firmware version?

A search on "linksys wrt1900ac connection issues" gives lots of reading choices...

                              Atheros AR9485

It is a common problem with the Qualcomm Atheros wifi devices. I had the same problem when I upgraded to windows 10. I Ended up buying a new wireless device. Some people claim it is being caused by the bluetooth, which I tend to believe. Windows 10 claimed my laptop has no bluetooth device, which it does.
Bluetooth uses the network deivce to transmit it's signal. Here is a forum page with other people having the same problem.
