For the stuck slides, put the carb bowls back on, and fill with GOOD carb cleaner, B12 Chemtool is what I like. You can also GENTLY heat the body up, and then spray a 50/50 mix of ATF(Auto trans fluid) and Acetone. It WILL break down Oxidation quickly, much better than PB Blaster, and it will not hurt the diaphram.

Yeah it's a pretty blue, but just because you're old is no excuse to buy a bagger. Fortunately I have wrenches.

You are in good hands. Patience pays off Cleaner than clean is good.
Always ASK > better to take longer and get it right than to have to do it over

thanks Phil. Appreciate the confidence booster. One of my coworkers who's been harassing me for obsessing told me today it was a good thing I was doing what I'm doing. Guess the Stuck slides convinced him."Venturered" 80 XS1100G - "DoraMax" getting sort of resto/destro ed.

I emailed jetsrus because I'm struggling in my next step. I'm soaking a couple carbs to achieve slide release, and I have the others down further...pulled Main Jets (and washer), removed "screw with a thin washer covering the pilot jet passage". Mike there just sent me a link to the page I am unable to figure out. :/ I think I may just not know enough about what I don't know to be able to ask the questions. The thing I keep bumping up against is thinking I have a I have a BS 34 unit and finding no mention of such at jetsrus.com, where everyone says I should get my Mikuni only jets and other carb parts. I feel like a complete foole."Venturered" 80 XS1100G - "DoraMax" getting sort of resto/destro ed.

Thanks Phil. Which immediately brings me to my next question. The Tech Tips chart shows main jet size is 137.5. When ordering I find only whole numbered jets, no fractional sizes. should I get a 136 and drill it out? If so, is there a thread where I can get familiar with the practice before I start destroying things? Am I doing this all wrong, and should I wait until I have everything out to try to understand jet selection?"Venturered" 80 XS1100G - "DoraMax" getting sort of resto/destro ed.

argh I mess up so much I need to not have that "ten minute limit" on editing my posts.

jetsrus.com is where I intend to get my parts, but their CS guy told me their site is structured by carb type first, and I've seen nothing that says BS34 Mikuni. So I stumble around hoping I'll find something that looks reasonable, and then try to zero in on what's right. it's not working. Thanks again xs11.com XSives!"Venturered" 80 XS1100G - "DoraMax" getting sort of resto/destro ed.

GOOD NEWS! TWO MOAR SLIDES LOOSE
dropped them back in place til i can get time to disassemble.
For those of you who keep logs to help out newbs like me...what worked was alternating a hosing with spray carb cleaner, then a couple days later a dose of Penetrating Blaster, then a couple days later back to carb cleaner.
I sprayed the intake side and the top of the slides. one of the POs had replaced the diaphrams with the heavier units which pull off the slides (no, I am NOT sure this is correct OR compatible, but it's what is there) and they were already off before I applied any chemicals."Venturered" 80 XS1100G - "DoraMax" getting sort of resto/destro ed.

One week later....
Diaphrams I removed. Well, one of them, anyway.....
1. slide and diaphram separate
2. diaphram only, upside down.
3. reassembled, top view.
"]
4. reassembled, lower view.
Do i have what looks like a right part? I know the PO did (claims to have done) a full rebuild on all the carburetors, and I am reasonably sure some of his choices for components were questionable. I see the "BS 34" molded in the lip of the membrane, but a great man once told me "There are lots of BS 34s, and they're different.""Venturered" 80 XS1100G - "DoraMax" getting sort of resto/destro ed.

You have the right diaphragms. I don't recommend messing with them (ie removing from the slide) if there isn't a problem or you're risking damaging an expensive part. Those are aftermarket from JBM Industries (http://www.jbmindustries.com) and they require the plastic ring to be cut off. They have the thick donut instead of the plastic retainer. It's important that you put the slides back in facing the correct direction because there isn't a notch in the diaphragms. The hole in the slide needs to facing the engine side.
Edit: BTW, I put those diaphragms in my '81SH and they are high quality and will continue to use them in the future.82J · 81SH · 79SF Fire Damage · 78E · 79F Parts Bike · 04 Buell Blast
