Here we go. Partly because I just can't leave stuff alone, and partly because some stuff needs to not be left alone, I am returning "Dora" to project status. Dora, short for Doragon, one of the Japanese words for dragon, was born as a plain old 1000G. One of the POs Venturerized her. Yesterday began the deventurerization process. This will not be an exciting project, and i will not do anything revolutionary to the machine. If you're a purist, you'll probably love this job, as I will be trying to get back to original as much as possible. I already have some questions about "unchanging" stuff, like the acorn nut that holds my shocks in place being to shallow without the sidebag guards in place, but enough of that.......We start on the trailer, outside "the unit", Dora's home for the past nine months. I just realized how long it took for this to gestate. I like it.

On the way to the Operating Room:

In the shop (fortunately I have an understanding boss and a chronic tinkerer for a Body Shop manager at my place of employment), first round of stripping:

It looked so wrong I took a shot from the other side to compare to photos here so I could know nothing was missing:

Kurt's link alerted me this morning (Kurt's PO link) http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=45585
so I paid attention to the badge area of my tank and found what looks okay (photo in that thread)

Today i sneaked a moment to Excess over things during the work day. More later

Yeah it's a pretty blue, but just because you're old is no excuse to buy a bagger. Fortunately I have wrenches.

    two parts right now:
    1. The oil filter bolt. Rounded off by PO, need to weld up a new head and muscle it off. My shop guy is skeptical. I think he thinks he's stronger than his welds.

    2. Pull/drain fuel tank. Now, if a guy was to do that, it looks to me like I need to pull a "locating damper" out of the center of another "locating damper" allowing it to collapse enough to come out of the tank retainer hole. This also appears to be an odd approach to building a vehicle.

put third set of hands on the filter bolt today. thinking now is welding up the nut as a head may heat the bolt enough to break it free.

remembered how to pull the tank right after i lifted it off the locating rubbers. gotta slip off some tubing and drain her. inside of cap is rusty. tank was supposedly relined a couple years back. pessimistic.

leaning toward fairing removal, headlight work, maybe putting hardbags back on (lockable and also possible alt. sound system location, as the CD player is currently mounted in the fairing. generally I am advised to keep the fairing. We'll see. For now the fairing remains attached

Oh yeah. hard bag locks are giving me trouble. joy

Fuel tank off, fuel and vacuum lines off. Discovered a prominent stream coming from the Left shutoff valve. No, there was no vacuum applied. I believe I have confirmed the gasoil suspicion which I had elected to discount. Think I've now confirmed I need to pull the carbs and inspect/rebuild 3 & 4.

Now, the S. O.'s response when I told her my pet cock was leaking......

As much as I'm enjoying the build write ups...

I really want to know what your S.O.'s response was to that.

Kat, you are a bad woman. All she had to say was she didn't do it.

You don't stay happily (mostly) married for 23 years by being good ALL of the time. lol

                But that's beside the point...
You left a cliff hanger. I mean, someone else had to be curious... right?

                        Holy carp!

                        I wasn't THAT curious. I mean...

                        I withdraw the question.
The fact that it's already been answered has nothing to do with it...

bit too much attention, Ms Kat?

Well, it looks like one of Dora's P.O. s confused JBWeld with Formagasket. appears the petcock rebuild wil take place in situ.

Noticed blue parts expanding to cover more and more of the workbench area near my "parking spot" in the body shop. Today I started tossing stuff in the trunk, moving the bike trunk, rack and backrest out to the "the unit" where parts bike, spare frame, and other spares are stored. The girlfriend's granddaughter is coming to town next week, and I've been instructed to clean my car before collecting them at the airport, so this could be difficult.

Okay I admit it. The past several posts, not including Wildkat's "curiosity" have been lame and not really about much. just felt I should post, even if there was no substance. Fact is, I'm not working much. Sneaking away from the day job at lunch and as I can to wrench a little and snap one or two photos, spending evenings either tending the parents or maintaining the home. I don't know how you guys with kids do it.

Any tips on how to get oversealed petcock mounting screws to spin? Something dark gray sealant/adhesive looking but thin is protruding from around the petcock base, and I think probably in the screw holes as well. Trying to disassemble the fuel valves without removing isnt working, as the lip on the tank blocks the screwdriver from the lower "inside" screws. I'm thinking about an impact, or even a hammer drill, but I don't like the idea.
