Hey Moto! Obviously I'm a Fluke man being in the electrical field, but I know many manufacturers have the Tach attachment. My question is: would it show the actual RPM, or half or double, as it attaches to the #1 spark plug wire and counts ignition pulses just like an external tach that you wrap the wire around the plug wire five times.1979 XS1100F

I've always been interested in buying an external tachx but wondered if I would always run into this very problem due to our wasted spark system.1979 XS1100F

Depends on the meter setting. Not that it would matter since all you would be looking for in tuning us a drop or rise in RPMs.Nathan

But, I see where it would be handy to read a 50rpm drop when setting idle mixes, which I could see would be a problem hearing a drop that precise. Especially with a non-stock 4 into 1 set-up.Last edited by motoman; 09-02-2014, 11:42 AM.81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

First, let's see if this photo link will work?
Okay, photo works, you can click on it to see it up close. Note that the RPM and cylinder selections are 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 cylinder engines. In the OLD days when cars used cam driven distributors, they only had 1 coil, so with the # of cylinders, the # of spark pulses increased some per RPM. I have found that using the 4 cylinder mode on my old analog dwell/tach/voltmeter, it will read 1/2 the actual engine rpm values.
BTW, this one is using an inductive pickup that clips around the spark plug wire, not the actual primary coil wires. But again because ours is wasted spark, it will still count the same # of pulses just as if it were measuring and counting the primary wire signals.
