  • donebysunday motorcycle accident

I just learned that donebysunday has been involved in a motorcycle accident. He has been in the hospital for two weeks with multiple injuries. The worst is multiple broken ribs and a collapsed lung. He hasn't seen it, but believes his XS1100LH a total loss. Under the circumstances, that doesn't much matter. It appears highly unlikely that there will be a funeral as a result of this, but to me it sounded like it could have easily ended differently.

Don is going to be in the hospital for at least 5 more days. He could use some cheering up. Direct line is 262-521-8926

To send cards, he's Don Sundby in room 206.

    Phone: (262) 521-8800

He doesn't have access to the internet, so his response will have to wait. I'm sure he'd appreciate a few cards or calls.

Oh man! That's some bad news.

I know first hand what multiple broken ribs and a collapsed lung means to him. No comfortable position to be in and nurses handing you this crazy little thing that looks like a toddlers toy that you have to breath into to increase your lung capacity.

Absolutely no fun with busted ribs.

Somebody get him a laptop to keep his mind off the pain. It helped me a lot.

        Crikey!

To heck with the bike, I hope the nurses are in good shape!

Ouch, Get well soon for Don. I too have experienced the broken ribs and can attest to that being no fun. I managed to avoid the collapsed lung which is very serious.

            Hey Marty,

Thanks for the info on Done, glad to hear he's toughing it out, and will most likely be okay.

That breathing "toy", an incentive spirometer does both help to exercise the lungs and ribcage/diaphragm to recondition lung function, but also helps to reduce or prevent fluid buildup. When folks get injured, have major heart/lung surgery, it can "HURT" to breath deeply, and so they will only breath fairly shallowly. This doesn't properly expand the alveoli and get the air moving completely, and so fluid can develop, pool, and that's the media that germs like to grow in...Pneumonia can develop!!

Yeah, when the lung gets punctured, its' like a balloon, and the air escapes into the space AROUND the lung....called the Pleural space. It's usually just a fluid filled space, and the vacuum/lack of air there is what allows the space to pull/suck on the lung tissue as that space is expanded during the inhaling action....the diaphragm drops and the ribs lift up and outward, similar to pulling on the handles of a bellows..it creates a vacuum which pulls air into the lungs. But if there's a hole in the lung...then air leaks into the space and prevents the vacuum affect, and the lung can then collapse. The chest tube helps to keep draining/pulling any excess AIR/bubbles as well as possible blood and fluid from the Pleural space, so that a proper vacuum can be developed to inflate the lung. The lung has to heal the hole first, so it can hold in air...not leak.

Glad to hear he's breathing easier and able to talk, and will be released soon.

                    Done

I am so sorry to hear of your misfortune. Hope you get back on your feet soon and I also hope the bike is not a total loss. I worry about just what happened every time I get on one of my bikes. Unfortunately our reaction times don't improve with age.
