You say yours came with gold badges? The plot thickens!
Everything on my motorcycle was black and gold. Side cover script, 1100 on the air box, tank badges, front fork emblem, etc. The only silver chrome on the bike was the forks and the on the wheels.

The dealers could have easily switched them around at the time.
Anything is possible I suppose but not in my case. The dealer, Anaconda Tire and Cycle, called me when the MC came in. I watched them take it out of the crate, May 5th 1980.

You know I was at the shop shortly after they took mine out of the box. With mine they had to install the bags and fairing and at the same time replaced the rear shocks and replaced the springs in the front forks with heavier duty springs, The rear shock they took off one side had a red reflector on it and the other side did not. I was told by the dealer that demand was high and they had a hard time keeping up orders. It would not suprize me that many bikes showed up with differences.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.
I think we may all agree that the XS1100SG has gold emblems on the tank. The part number is J38-24161-00-00. The XS1100LG emblem part number is 4H3-24161-00-00. What difference could there be, other than the color?

THESE badges are actually for a golf cart and are flat but with a little heat on the back can be shaped to fit the tank.
The screw holes line up perfectly.

Agree, I think by late 80 and 81, alot of pieces were being 'used up' so to speak. At least my Venturer reflected that when I bought it new.
It had the gold tops on the carbs(still does), and the adjustable timing unit with degree'd wheel, even though it was a 4R0 system with no mechanical spring/weight advance.
Always thought it interesting since the Venturer was half Special, half Standard anyways.

I'm going to assume that those and these are the same thing but eBay is just more expensive? Anyone know if these ebay ones are actually pre-shaped or not? For $8+SH I'd be willing to try shaping them. Also, do the special badges fit standard tanks? My '79F had gold badges and they are quite curved compared to the picture.

I think if you buy those designated for a Special and mount them on a standard, they will break. That's why the tank emblems have a different part number for left and for right. The curve is pretty drastic on the leading side.
Your tank badge is reproduced in metal. These aren't perfect and they aren't cheap. Much has been written about them on this forum.

I put the golf cart badges on The Green Hornet. I used a heat gun on the back of them and heated until they were kind of easy to bend and then I held them in the approximate shape of the old ones but a little more accentuated and held them until they cooled and held that shape. Screwed them down and they snugged right up against the tank and fit like OEM.
Here's a pic before I put the fairing on.
