  • MNS Tank Emblems

Were the tank emblems silver chrome on both 1980 and 1981 MNS models? How about the side cover emblems - silver or gold?

Yup, silver badges on a black and gold limited edition model. Same twisted sense of humour that brought us the standards with rectangular headlight and gauges and signals but round mirrors, not to be confused with the specials with round headlight and gauges and signals but rectangular mirrors.

              MNS Tank Emblems

Part Numbers for the Tank Emblems (left side)

              1980SG - J38-24161-00-00 (gold/black)
              1980LG - 4H3-24161-00-00 (no color reference)

              1981SH - J38-24161-00-00 (gold/black)
              1981LH - 4H3-24161-00-00 (no color reference)

              Conclusion:

Emblem part numbers for the SG and SH are identical - gold/black.

Emblem part numbers for the LG and LH are identical - assume to be silver/black?

Thanks Greg. Glad to clear that up. So did the 1981LH use the gold/black as well? What, if anything, were the silver (chrome)/black used on? Ken Talbot mentioned "special edition" used the chrome? What was a special edition?

I posted some part numbers for the emblems off of a website that shows the parts break down. But nothing is written in stone.

The gold emblem pictured was what was 0n the '79 models and maybe the '78 as well.

The SG and SH share tank emblems as Mike pointed out. The LG and LH have a different part number because it's chrome instead of gold. I know Greg's picture shows gold tank emblems and I contend it's in error. The gold badges will fit fine and look fine. I'm pretty sure that if you're looking to do a 100 point concours restoration on a Midnight Special, it would behoove you to come up with some chrome badges.

Yeah, those look like Standard badges. It seems to me all the MNS's I've seen have gold badges. With everything else gold or black, why would they throw 1 chrome piece in the mix?

                              Greg,
Only the gold badges are available unless you use the ill fitting golf cart badges. Why else would the Midnight badges carry a different part number than the other Special. Plus, I seem to remember goofy silver chrome badges on a bike otherwise trimmed in gold.

Somebody on this forum must have bought a new one and will remember.
