  • The wonders of Pine-Sol

I have been working on this SG for a while now. Come across A LOT of rusty stuff on this bike. It is almost like it sat in a humidor for all those years instead of a garage.

Well, I wanted to clean some parts before descaling them. Put them in my ultrasonic cleaner, turned the heater on, max out the time setting. Come back the next morning, left them soak for the night, and I am telling you the rust is almost gone completely. Seems to wipe off the parts. I did not get pictures because, well, I did not expect this result. I took my fuse box mounting plate, that holds the solenoid, flasher, and the fuse box. It had rust in several places, you could run your finger over the rust and have a brown finger tip. Dropped it into the Pine-sol USC, and come morning, the metal is slightly discolored, but all the rust and crust is GONE. Its like I found the chief ingredient in Metal Rescue!

Yeah, as you may know on the Triples forum, pinesol is the alternative method to Berrymans . However, some have reported that it turned their carbs dark. I will never dismantle my carbs again knowing what a pain it is when u lose a detent ball, etc.

Nick- What you're doing right there sends shivers down my spine. Not because I'm a pro or anything, but when I hear guys mention "butterfly shaft seals" and other rubber pieces I've thankfully never had issues with, getting warped/shrunk etc. from cleaning . . .

Short story, when I broke my GS carbs down, the only thing I put in the Berrymans bucket was the hollow carb bodies. EVERYTHING was removed from them.

well the juice is Pine Sol, and if butterfly seals didn't dry up and crack from sitting 20 years outside in Michigan.....they should plump up nicely

I have used it on carbs several times and LOVE the outcome. Soak them for 12 -24 hours, rinse off, dry and clean as a baby's bottom.
Based upon input I have gotten elsewhere, I do not substitute anything but Pine-Sol. Mine keeps the yellow look to it. I have used it as weak as 50/50 mix with water, still does good, but not as good as straight.

And yes, it is safe on the butterfly seals and other parts.

As for pulling them apart, the biggest PITA is getting all the screws loose. Once you know the detent balls and springs are there, keeping them is very simple.

Like I said though, this seems to work to remove actual rust from steel parts!! I had no clue it would do such things.

Nick, Is that an ultrasonic cleaner? If so, where did you get? I see Crest brand on it. What size/model is yours?

I've use PineSol on a bunch of nuts/bolts/screws. Does a great job.

But I've noticed that it changes the color of a lot of them (on my Honda at least). Almost seems like it is compromising the surface of them. Possibly making them much more prone to corrosion than the way they originally came from the factory. Any thoughts or experience with this?

Makes me a little hesitant to use it.

Well, take it from Don and a few other's on what they say. I only speak from word of mouth. But, on the GS forum, many say it turns the carb bodies dark. It's definitely cheaper than a gallon of Berrymans. And, from my understanding, the Berrymans of the days before I was born was much more powerful than now. The formula changed, but still does a great job.

Berrymans carb dip does a good job on carb parts. But it does change the color of things as well. Even brass stuff comes out clean and brightish, but a dull finish.

With Pine-sol, I notice it does change the color of some metals, others not so much. It seems to depend on the composition of the metal. My fuse box panel is definitely a more bronze color now. Not sure if it makes it more corrosion prone, time will tell. And this winter will CERTAINLY tell a story as cold and wet as it has been. Most nuts and bolts just come out clean. But some do come out a little darkish.

I'm mainly interested in what it does to fasteners with regard to maybe stripping off the original finish. Seems to turn then lighter/silver, as opposed to the darker tint of the fasteners. Don't want my screws gettin' rusty and stuck .
