Just ordered a colortune!

Well,

Colortune got here today..I had this WHOLE thing recorded on video, but the gopro overheated and froze, making the file corrupt...

They mailed it in a bubble envelope..I ordered it from morgan.
The box was flat on arrival, and the contents were strewn around.


I went to cylinder one first.
Plenty of spark, no fire. Well, thats odd I thought...ill get back to it thinking its just too light outside..

Went to cyl 2.
Saw color instantly.
slightly rich, evened it out to blue with a hint of orange.

cyl 3, same deal

cyl 4, same.

Went back to 1,
Figured out itll only ignite the cylinder when revved higher...which makes the backfire which is what I've been chasing.....meaning bad coil.

Funny thing is, that's a MikesXS black coil...only 2.2k on it. FAIL coil!

Might as well splurge and get some of the Dyna coils..

Anyone gotta good price check on em?

If #1 is not firing at idle, neither would #4. Coil is NOT the issue, even though the black coils have a poor track record. May wanna cut back #1 plug wire for a fresh connection.

Easy check, swap 1 with 4 and see if 4 is no longer sparking/firing.

I doubt that is your issue, because of the way the XS coils work. The charge travels down one plug wire, through the engine to the other plug, and up that plug wire, sparking both plugs each time. And your getting spark each time.

Have you tried synching the carbs yet? On my GSX when I first put the carbs back together I forgot to bench synch. I went to synch them and no 1 had zero vacuum. I crapped thinking I had no compression (never had the bike running till then) or a bad valve, who knows...After cranking the synch screw enough I got vacuum on no 1.

You may also want to try adjusting the mix screw, and make sure you have a good o-ring and spring in that synch screw. That can cause a vacuum leak.

I did have the carbs synced beforehand, all were even using the morgan carbtune.

My carbs are the earlier ones, without the o-rings on the pilot screws.

with the colortune on, I screwed the pilot out more and more, the ONLY time I would get fire from the color tune was at/around 2.5k

I wouldn't worry too much, I'd just tune that cylinder by ear, the colortune can be somewhat quirky

Don't want to hijack the thread but I never thought that before. Each plug has its own secondary wire which should get the charge to each plug from the coil at the same time. Body of each plug is right to ground through the engine ground.

Does not seem possible....can you elaborate on this?

Well, with the bike on idle, I screwed the pilot down all the way on cylinder one, and the bike wasn't effected all..

Does this I'm not getting fuel to cylinder one at idle??

I'm video taping the sync process for the forum, I synced last week, colortuned, and now I'm syncing again, cylinder One is lower than the other three, so that shows that the colortune did effect sync.

I decided to see how much, but the pilot in number one does nothing to it.

Those mixture screws break the tips off in the orifice pretty easy. Take that screw all the way out and look at the tip. It should be almost as sharp as a needle. If it's blunted it's probably broken off and your not getting fuel to that cylinder at idle.

Just pulled out the mix screw, it's normal, and with a flashlight I can see through the hole..

Then the pilot jet or the cicuit itself is plugged.

The cylinder DOES fire off idle right?

Yeah, when I had the color tune in, you'd hear a backfire or a fire of some sort, then you'd see colors when it was off idle...

Sounds like I gotta go through my carbs.... Again.... Huh?
