    Ha! True enough...

Got to work on the bags a little this weekend. Here's a few pics of the progress so far...

I went to Oreilly's and found these dual element sockets that take an 1157 bulb. I got this type because they seemed to be the easiest to install and they have a spade built onto the body for a ground wire.

And some aluminum metal repair tape to use as a reflector and to insulate the plastic from the heat of the bulb.

I used the socket to mark where to cut the hole using the top of the existing smaller hole as the outer edge of the larger one.

I cut the hole out with the dremmel using a cutting bit and laid som of the aluminum tape down on the bottom. I think I'll be putting some around the bulb also just for reflective purposes.

The lens fits back on there with no problems at all and plenty of clearance.

Next I'll get the mounting figured out. I have a couple of old sets of rough bags laying around and may use the mounts from them if they'll work.

      More later.

        Hi Greg,
That looks like a nice modification. If you have not already thought of this I suggest using an 1157 LED Bulb as it will run much cooler.

That has crossed my mind Phil but I want to retain the auto cancel if I can. I think if I drill a couple air holes inside there for some air flow it will help.

I'll watch it when I get it functioning and if it gets too hot I'll swap them out and be the old guy on the motorcycle with the turn signal aways flashing.

            Hi Greg,
I thought you were retaining the original rear turn signals aswell.
If that is the case the self cancel should still work.

Nope, those lights in the bags are going to be turn signals and auxillary brake and tail lights when I get done. That was the purpose of changing the light fixtures inside.

                Hi Greg,
if you put the stock 27W/6W bulbs in those holders the self-canceller should still work OK despite the signal being sent via a trailer adapter?
That is, I don't see why not.
Although we used a trailer adapter to convert my son's XS650 rig to combo stop/turn/tail lights the bike's self-canceller was long gone by then so I dunno for sure.

I'm getting the mounts painted as we speak. I had an old set of bags that were all cracked and broken but the factory XS mounts are good.

I need to get the trailer adapter still also.

I have a 4 day weekend over Christmas to work on it and my SF.

                      Got the mounts painted..

I need to get some SS bolts, washers, and some plastic or rubber insulating washers to get the bagsd mounted to th mounts but here's what they'll look like.

I need to find some chrome or aluminum tubing for across the back between the mounts. Headed to Lowe's.

Ha ha, sorry. I'm kinda lazy that way. I'll go the easy way every time.

Those mounts aren't too hard to come by.
