If you can't figure out what happened before you push it a long ways, maybe you shoudn't be astride something that's gonna bring things to you quite so fast. I've tried to start many times after leaving it in the off position. Takes me less than 5 seconds to figure what's wrong. If you were an AMA member, they would come rescue you for free.
Well, the added info to that one is that I had been having issues with the bike and was making some "corrections", so when it quit, it seemed as if my repair had failed. Which is why I did not think of the petcocks right away.

+1...........from first-hand experience also.........that kill switch was the fartherest thing on my mind.......as should be. Also understand the MSF reasoning, but 'real-world' is totally different......just sayin....
On top of that, on THESE bikes if the tipover switch is working and the bike ends up on it's side, the engine is already stopped anyways so the kill switch is a moot point.

I was always taught to respect my elders, but it keeps getting harder to find one.
I only use the kill switch when necessary, ie: When parking on an area where it's necessary to keep the right foot down and also hold the break while turning it off in gear to hold it there when I get off. I know almost never, but it has happened and it was real handy.

I don't use the kill switch..my opinion is it is on the wrong side of the handle bars to begin with...you drop your bike, the XS shuts off but on other bikes your throttle is jammed into the ground, full throttle in gear, kill switch is wayyy down low..it should be on the left bar sticking up in the air easy to get to vs key or kill switch on the right bar...just my thought.
Only time I ever use the kill switch other than an emergency situation is to do a high speed chop. Other than that it is a useless trinket my bikes have.

Couple of more parts bikes of which 2 more will live!
I will hit the kill switch and coast into a parking spot or into my garage, then the exhausts fumes don't follow me .

I have new gasket and all for the exhaust, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I parked mine in a parking lot with slight incline and left it in gear. Came out after a few minutes and worked for about a half on it till I realized it was in in gear and wouldn't crank
