Fast trip

I made it from Ottawa to Vancouver in two and a half days on my SF in 1983. Rained the whole way. Not sure what my average speed would have been, but I know Saskatchawan was well over a 100 all the way. Could never do it again though. The bike would make it, but knee's and back couldn't.

email TKAt about a fork brace, and make sure the carbs are in sync! I just put a "real" speedo on the MNS, and I KNOW Special Ed had it over 100 at least once on the way home from dream machines! My MNS will handle very well for a thirty year old bike, and though it will NOT keep up with a modern 600 in the corners, it IS fun!

The beauty of the XS,throw a fairing on,you have a nice cruiser.Take it off,and your off to the drag strip.. I personally use my bike as a cruiser,don't get me wrong,I like triple digits too,just not a steady diet of it.I find it very difficult to check out the short skirts at 100. Guess I don't want to pay the hospital for some damn four wheeler not seeing me. Just my opinion. Also it's a funny thing,Truck drivers and speeding tickets= no job

Yup but even us truckers get the urge every now and then! I don't know about your truck but mine will only do 5 mph over the normal speed limit so I get my jollies elsewhere. I guess we also have many many miles of open straight road where one can see for miles so it is a little easier to open the old girls up and fly. Dayum that is so much fun.

My truck will do 85,not that I ever do.. Ya gotta clean out the old girls from time to time,Here in N.Y. if you get a speeding ticket for 20 over the speed limit,your insurance damn near doubles.Plus,3-5 points on your licence'

you get a ticket for i think it is 15 over here and they can take your liscense, 6 points for reckless driving and 6 more for the 15 over.

I can't imagine riding so hard an 1100 is 'too slow.' I freely admit to being a 55 and under person since I like to cruise and turn my head this way and that, but still this bike is a behemoth. It might have slow reflexes compared with modern sport/sport touring bikes but it's still a mean machine. It scares me to think of even riding that fast anywhere but on a track.

I think the most I've had it up to is 85-95 passing or on a back road, but that is a rare day indeed.

I will admit that my addiction to the need for speed has came back to haunt me, but i know that i will beat it. I know that if i got a new sport bike, or even a sport tourer, i would hurt myself. Every time i used to make or get something that was fast, it was never enough. The XS is fun, and i won't give it up, but i may shoot for something a little more modern to go along with it. My son just got a ZX14 8 days ago, and dropped it on his first ride on it over the weekend. I felt really bad for him. He is ok, but the bike needs new fairings, and a brake master cyl. resevoir. He said his SV650 handled better than the ZX14. I think he just fixated on the trees off the corner, instead of looking through it. He will be back on in hopefully a month.

Sorry to hear about your son's mishap. ZX14s are really big and really fast. SV650 has to be way more forgiving. A short ride on that monster might fix your need for speed, and make the XS seem like a nice safe middle weight cruiser.

I know what you mean. I am way better off on a bike that tops out at 135mph than one that I will simply have to find out what it tops at. I know that some of the modern sportsbikes would require at the very least a change of shorts if not a blood transfusion or worse. These old girls keep me happy and thrilled to be alive when I am on them.
Hope your son is ok and that he learned something valueable from his escapade. I know a few of my get offs were lessons that needed learning.

I agree that a riding school is a good idea. There are some things that only riding into a situation will teach you whether you dump it or not is just luck. In my 42 years of being a bike owner I have come across quite a few situations that can never be covered in a safety course. Theory is good and very useful, but mistakes, once made, will burn into your brain forever.

speed

my 81SH is a little shaky at 100. so i put 40psi in both tires, put 10psi in the front shocks and it seems better, but somethings causing a slight vibration at about 80, so i shut er down. maybe its the tire. i had replaced my old cupped tire and put this one on a while back. eveythings ok at anything under 80. ive read these bikes top end is somewhere around 123mph? i couldnt think of goin that fast on this bike
