  • i'm looking for a transformer

i'll post as much info as i know about this. I purchased an old Shaeffer beer clock at an auction some years back. I'd say it is circa 1960's. Lite and clock have worked well until just recent. The lite will turn on for about 10-15 minutes then go out. If it sits a little while and i turn on again, it will repeat the action. The clock will stay working only the lite goes out. The clock is illuminated by an 8 inch flourescent tube. There is no starter in the clock, so we figured it has to be the transformer.
Here is the info stamped on the transformer:
    Robertson Transformer co.
    6W .145amps 120v
    It measures about 1.5x1.5 inches.
My mother has really grown fond of this old clock as it doubles for a nite lite.
I'd really hate to toss a nice old piece of beeriana just cause i can't find a transformer. [yes, the local electronic/electric shops have been searched].
So all that said, does anyone have one laying around or perhaps a reasonable facsimile or a lead to get one??
    thanks,

Why not change the light fixture in it and use a modern flourescent light bulb in there?

Try a sign shop, the kind that builds/sells commercial signage. They use a lot of oddball-sized lamps and ballasts that you won't be able to get anywhere else. If they can't come up with it, then changing to newer light source may be your only choice.

What makes you think it's the transformer, and not the bulb? I'm not skilled in the art of troubleshooting fluorescent lights.

I would like to pose another option for you: CCFL Lights. They are used to back-light some LCD displays, and computer enthusiasts sometimes light up their cases with them. These kits are available, and for a reasonable price. However, I couldn't find a 8" kit.

Here is a kit with two 4" bulbs:

        http://www.amazon.com/Dual-inch-CCFL...pd_sim_sbs_e_3

        Single 6":

        http://www.amazon.com/Nincom-CCFL-6G.../dp/B0057ISO08

Or buy bulbs and inverters separately (the 196 or 205 mm unit might work for you):

Anyway, I just wanted to toss out that option.

First one on the list looks like it'll do the job.

2000 XJR1300. The Real modern XS11. Others are just pretenders.
