Rich's point is this...(I think). The filler neck in the tank extends about an inch below the gasket surface. This leaves a void that traps air when you fill up to the rim wit the bike level. The only way to replace the trapped air with more fuel is to over-fill it a bit and agitate the air pocket out.

I get it, but personally speaking, my butt would rather I stopped every 100 mi or so to give it a rest, so I'm not a candidate for this fill-up method.

There is no extra space in the tank when I do it... I fill it up, and dribble the last little bit in there until no more can go in. No possible way to add an extra 1/2 gallon, unless it's outside the tank. I agree that the fumes are not being re-captured, but that's the only difference. Perhaps the difference is actually between the Special vs Standard setups. The "neck" is only about 1/2" below the gasket surface on the Special, and you fill it on the sidestand to put the fill cap in most upright position. When it fills up, there is no trapped air in there.

Ot is a special vs standard thing. The standard has the fuel cover recessed into the tank.

          Ah yes

"Now I see", said the blind man. This setup is only for the standard tank. You "special guys" gotta stop around 100 mi and go pee anyway. LOL

                ?

I figured from Lexington, VA, up the 81 to Harrisburg, then 15 north to Painted Post, then 417 west through Woodhull, to Jasper then maybe 36 or on to Wellsville and up 19. All real nice rides.

                    Probably

But after riding east from CA and riding with the group, I thing I would be ready for the quick way to Woodhull where I can relax for a couple of days. I'm not known for riding behind semi's much. Mostly going about 40 MPH more than they are allowed or capable of. LOL I had a friend bet me I would get more than one ticket on my trip. I didn't take the bet.

I would be interested in meeting any XSives so inclined along the way. Not asking for accomodations or meals, just meetings, maybe escorting me out of town. LOL Of course I don't usually turn down such offers.

The plan is to leave sometime in May, weather permitting and possibly arrive in time for the NorthEast rally on Memorial Day weekend. If there are any here or along the way who would like to go along on such a trip, the more the merrier. I'm planning this trip will last for about 3 weeks giving me time to visit all the friends in my old stompin' grounds in upstate NY.

Any along the way who could entertain the thought of being a helping hand along should the need arise, could PM me with their phone # for just in case, would be greatly appreciated.

I promise to give all here a ride report with pictures upon my return....
I'm about 2 seconds from I-70 in Indianapolis. Would be great to meet another xs. We have a full house but I could probably get the wife to let you use the couch over night if needed. I can definitely feed you and ride out of town a bit. I will pm my number. As you finalize plans keep me posted. I work an odd scheduled but if I know when your coming through I can take a couple days off. I would be happy to lend a hand if you need it.

                        Getting tougher

The plan is sitll ongoing, but the rising price of fuel is beginning to make me take second calculations of expensis. Just the past two weeks have increased the cost by over $300. Gas costs $4/gal now here in Cantaffordya.

                            Calculating

I was doing the calculating using the prices everywhere else. I knew Cantaffordya was $.50 higher and you have to go as far as Texas before you see much difference.
