Haha, I just had to post...
Seems the Grail has a BIG brother; tucked way in my garage is a NOS still in box(s) complete set of !!1978!! XS11E exhausts, complete with new gaskets, flanges, collars, clamps, mounting hardware and everything in between just as they slid across the parts counter some 32 years ago. I would put them on my even nicer bike, but the system currently on it is evry bit as spotless as those still in the box. Do you think I could charge admission?

Sorry for being so smug, but the chance to gloat comes so seldom. Anyone interested in buying them should keep an eye out for my final Estate Auction, unless I accidentally get stuck in the rain or some equally disasterous event occurs to my precious XS11E that would require me to wipe the water off with a sterile towel and soft cotton gloves, and possibly leave a minute water spot or perish the though, scratch. Then and only then would I even consider installing the back-up system.

I did look at his eBay bike, and agree it is very nice! But I would never even dream of putting a bungee cord on the seat, let alone allow any foreign substance touch the paint, chrome, rubber, or any part of anything. I always wear clean underwear when riding mine, and wipe the bottom of my riding boots before touching the pegs. Also noted is that a keychain was allowed to touch the handlebar mount, the pipes had some bluing, and there was dust on the frame by the serial numbers. Oh well...

I am convinced that the pipes I keep closely guarded are even nicer than those on eBay since I would NEVER set them on unprotected and unblessed sacred Yamaha ground without a bed of angel feathers to protect them from from the evils of minute airborne dust particles carried by those pesky corrosive oxygen atoms. I also have boxes full of all the emblems, trim, rubber, cables, grips, and any other part that may succumb to the evils of age, use, and being looked at too closely, so when I want to turn my 2 wheeled darling into the most perfect bike on the planet, it will be possible.

Thanks for the great post, and if anyone is ever on the east side of the Mississippi, I would be glad to do a little bench racing. Oh and by the way, here is a photo of one of my bikes:

    Best Regards,
    Yamanatic
Sure it's gonna make some noise, there's GAS exploding in there!

Looks like the seller may get more for 1/2 the exhaust system then he will for the whole bike LOL. Says 150 to ship which is over and above 600.00 some odd dollars that is currently bid on the exhaust.

If you look closely, these have one feature not found on the original pipes; a big ol' 'data plate' pop-rivited to the end of the muffler, right where you'll be able to see it. Bummer...

I've got the "data plate" on my mine too. I bought a used but solid exhaust system for my standard just so I had something to work with for my restoration. Gave 425.00 for it.
But the plater I use will re-plate my entire system for 700.00 and I plan on removing the four pop-rivets, get rid of the plate and fill the four holes prior to plating, then I'll have the original look. And my plating will be heavier than the factory plating.

That NOS system is gonna sell for more than 1125.00 IMHO so I'll just be watching. It's all about the demand!

Yours must be a factory replacement also. I'm somewhat mystified that these would have the EPA plate, as those standards only apply to bikes built after '82, so why would you need an EPA certification? And to me, those plates pretty much ruin these for 'restoration' purposes, as they're not exact duplicates.

Must be a 'better safe than sorry' move on Yamaha's part...

Hey XS11Lover, I can always use another relative, and judging by the rather colorful past of many of my family members, you just may be on to something!

I wonder if the EPA tag is the reason the seller took the picture with the pipes sitting on wood chips? Good eye JFM; those replacements must have been manufactured 'post '82.' The replacements I have do not have the tag, as they were bought in 1978 - interesting...

One of the reasons so few nice systems have survived is because 11's run so clean, there was little or no build-up of protective carbon on the inside of pipes; just very effecient conversion of carbon chains into CO2 & H2O, with emphasis on the H2O part. Unless the entire exhaust system reaches a high enough temp to vaporize the water, it would just sit on the bottom of the muffs until it made it's own weep hole.

Of the bikes I have seen with stock pipes recently, most of the bottoms are "soft" and held together by the chrome, if not blown out entirely. If you are in posession of an XS11 Standard with stock pipes, it may be wise to run a tank of pre-mix through it to allow some carbon build-up inside. Back in the early days, I knew people who would do just that with both cars and bikes specifically for that reason; early bike pipes (1950's & 1960's) were only single wall, and very prone to rustout.

                    Cheers,
                    Warren the Yamanatic

Maybe a 2h7 that he couldn't read right? That would be the number for a 78 or 79 standard, and sometimes it is hard to read those numbers, especially if you have the remnants of a drug induced fog going on at the same time. I mean, he certainly wasn't riding the thing, so I figure he's been sitting around all these years in a drug induced fog and just realized what he has.
