Wow compared to all you guys this is quite embarasing for me and never planed on mentioning it, but maybe this will stop someone from taking there bike to a shop like I did. Paid $1000 for the bike, $1500 in parts right off the bat. Found out later compression was gone. Took to 3 places for a bore out kit & head, valve rebuild. No one wanted to touch it. 4th place took it, 3.5 mths later = Cost $4000. Total $6500 so far. Still seem to be getting odds & ends for it, stopped counting last fall after the big bill. If I had the connections that I have today through this website I am sure I would have the re-build done a hellava lot faster, cheaper, and done better. Oh well, in June the Tinman905 is swapping out my carbs & will get it done right as the shop tuned it up too rich. So there is always a light at the end of the tunnel, its in June for me. Hey I still love the bike - Dan

Well, lets see, the bike was $800, but my parents made it a birthday present to that was free. $139 for registration and title, about $30 for replacement windshield for the vetter fairing (used) and around 35 for oil and filter. Then $15 for a regulator/recifier, $40 for a replacement tank, $35 for a set of vetter saddlebags, $40 for the trunk, about $120 so far in paint, and not done yet, $16 for a new trunk lid after the mounts broke and trashed the lid, $99 for an engine and about $200 for tires over the last 1.5 years. Oh, about $44 for LED bulbs for the brake lights and vetter trunk lights. $46 for a set of sync guages and like $8 for a middle and final drive dipstick. $35 for a clutch pack, I think that about sums it up.
Haven't been into the carbs other than setting the idle mixture and syncing them.
So, I guess this puts me at about the same into it that my parent paid for it for my birthday. Oh, I forgot the blade type fuse box from TC, and I still need to replace the side cover emblems and the tank emblems, but all in all it's less than 1700 so far and I figure I've gotten that much value in transportation and stress lowering, even considering the stress of working on it and all.Cy

i bought my 79xs11sf off craigslist. i guess the owner was in a pinch because he was advertising it at $1250 first, then put it up as $1000 must sell. I talked him down to $500, but said i couldn't afford it. called him back the next week and offered $300, and he said today only. I showed up at 9pm with a trailer. a new battery, and carb cleaning was all it took. for a total of $347 and some change i had a bike worth easily 5 times that. since then i've chopped, grinded and penny pinched for the cheapest, meanest-looking bobber i could imagine.
extras include: implement spotlight as headlight $10, tractor seat $5, cone filters $36, oil change $42, used gps as speedometer $80 (that was an impulse buy), new fuel line $7, 10-20 cans of flat black $10-20. i'm sure i might have missed something, but this is pretty close.
grand total of $547 plus some change and maybe one or two other things

Well, I paid $3783.86 out the door, brand new in 1978! But that included more than just the bike; I also got a trailer and hitch, windshield, 'universal' sissy bar, two new Bell helmets, a snowmobile suit for SWMBO, factory manual (listed at a mere $7.50!), title/license fees, and some other small items. How much have I spent since? Hmmm, let's see...
Up until '85, about the only money I spent on it other than maint and normal wear items was for two failed tachs; this was when you could still buy them new, about $500 for both (they weren't cheap even then). I went off the road and endoed it in late '85 (leading to it sitting for years; long story) and had to buy repair parts: used replacement tank $125, new bars $15, rear fender/taillight $30, windshield (bought years later as NOS) $100, one mirror and a clutch lever $30. The bike (and parts) sat for the next 15 years...
In '00, I decided it was time to get it running again, but of course now it needed more. Parts were very hard to find at the time (I didn't have internet yet; I'd just recently gotten rid of my party telephone line!), so I got disgusted and bought another bike (but kept the XS). Well, fast-foward a few more years, the internet arrived to the hinterlands, and I could now find parts much easier. Rebuild parts for the brakes (including new pistons), gasket set (pulled all the covers for a repolish), stuff to go through the forks. Total, about $300 worth of bits. Gave the bike (and all the parts) to my oldest kid, with the condition he had to get it running/riding to get the title. Well, he got lazy and decided to get something new and shiny (which he has since found out he couldn't afford) so I got the bike back. At this time I bought a clapped-out '78 as a parts source ($250). I finished up the stuff he'd failed to do (except for new paint) and was ready to put the bike back together when Biker Phil showed up with his FJ11 fork swap...
Well, I never could leave well enough alone, so more bits. $80 for two sets of FJ forks; gee, I might as well put better brakes on while I'm at it (4-piston HD calipers F&R, $110), tubeless Special wheels ($50), stainless/chrome hardware $170, various chunks of metal to make custom parts out of $100. Any parts I had to mod I pulled off the parts bike, so I still have all the stock parts if I ever decide to 'restore' the bike. I still need to buy paint and brake lines, so I figure about $250 for that. I also picked up a very nice spare OEM exhaust for $400. Some other misc bits bought here and there, probably about $200. It hasn't gone down the road since '85, but ran well when parked and has always been stored inside, so I don't expect any big issues.
Grand total? Right about $6500. A lot of money, but figured over 32 years, it works out to only about $200 per year, so that's not so bad. I'll never sell it at this point, so what the hell...

No one should be embarrassed by how much or how little they paid for or how much they have into their bike. It's all in what it's worth to you.
I got my E cheap. At that time it wasn't running and looked like a rusty dumpster. I knew nothing about an XS1100 but I know how to work on machines. I gambled with that $60, and looks like I did ok.Pat Kelly

Figure with the stereo added to housing, Around $5800. Ten years later, sold it. Fourteen yrs. later, bought it back for $100, replaced motor(still have original needs top-end overhaul) with matching yr. model motor($200), and a whole lota' NOS(Luggage rack,Yamaha accessory lower backrest(fits recess in trunk), NOS left-side exhaust complete with heat shield. Unknown cost
I remember when I went to Houston to pick up the Pathfinder. Dave's wife had a big BBQ at her house for all the ridding buddies and local XS owners that Dave knew. Sitting around the table that evenig with her and some others I didn't really know the discussion got around to what Dave had in that bike. She said that she had seen about $8000 worth of invoices and the guy across the table began to sniker and she said, "You just shut up, I really don't want to know". The Pathfinder was completely restored except for the tranny fix, came with many big boxes of "extra parts" and only cost me $2000.You can't stay young forever, but you can be immature for the rest of your life...

Bought mine from my Father-in-law for $1000. He just had carbs rebuilt/synched, and oil changed, so i just started riding it. Since then, I have replaced rear tire $130, rear pads $34, and numerous tanks of gas. It's a daily driver, and my wife wants to ride every weekend, even though currently it's 100+ degrees in Oklahoma. Next up will be a new "glass" for the Windjammer fairing for around $130 plus shipping, because the SOB is so scratched from previous owners, that riding at night is damn near impossible. Oncoming headlights glare over the entire shield temporarily blocking any and all vision.Richard
