I felt guilty this morning so I went out to the garage and started measuring the two '79 cylinder heads to see if I can use one of them without chimping out... maybe.

I know what you mean about looking at the XSive piles of parts, turning around and heading back into the house. Happens to me almost every day. I can thank JW for that too.

Put that 79 head and cams on Columbo along with the 79 mechanical advance like we talked about before. I think it would be a real runner with the higher dome late pistons.

    • Yeah, the 'problem' with my cunning, "late-model pistons with early cylinder head" plans for Columbo are:

The '79F head has a bad #2 plug hole that needs welding and re-tapping.
The '79SF head has bad valve guides and a kerchunk missing out of the #4 intake valve bucket hole.

I'm really tired of walking and cadging rides so I'll figure something out; maybe make it to a rally or two this summer.

      • There should be an insert available with the proper thread pitch you can ream out that hole and install in there. Like they do in those fantastically engineered Ford 4.6 and 5.4 engines that constantly blow out spark plugs. Threads and all.

Eh, I have the heads off so there's no need to to turn my Fine Yamaha engine into a F... a F... a Triton! I have a couple of welders that'll do the work, I just need to figure out where to get the hole tapped afterward or if I should go all Madagascar-penguin and try to do it myself.

            OUCH! tapping yourself SOUNDS painful!
but if the welder was able to get a good bead in the hole, it may not be too bad...

Wheeler, my 79 Special Yami says hi to Monster.

Orange, thank you for the link. Nanaimo store has four in aisle 40.

BA80, thank you for the link to the Irwin bolt grip.

I used the air gun ratatat on the bolt today. All that did was remove pieces of the attached washer. Was wondering if I drilled a hole through the alloy cover, and stuck a lever in. With the inner end against the bolt, and further out against the cover. the cover would turn and hopefully the bolt with it.

I will try the Grip-tite bolt remover first. Took the pipes off today, and lifted the front with a sky hook. My side car is currently attached.

The oil filter cup will not rotate, as it has square corners at the rear

Weld a nut to the bad bolt.

                  • What I did on my 750 was a torch and vise grips. The threads on that bolt are on the far end of it, so you're going to need some help to get it out.

                    • Update

Last night I considered my options. I had a new bolt and cover in my hand. Today I cut the head off the bolt with an angle grinder, and chiseled the remaining small pieces off, including the washer. I used the air gun with the ratatat hammer.
The cover fell off. The bolt turned easily by hand. The binding part must be the steel washer against the aluminum cover. That likely caused by the ham fist that put it on last, and the lack of any grease between the washer and cover.
I had already removed the pipes.
I think there is a new bolt available with a larger head.

I will get 2 new bolts and one new cover. I might decide to make my MNS mobile one day. Just need ignition, carburetors and front wheel and brakes.
Have the tank off Yami as I will be replacing it with a better one i have. I have the seat and all the rear end bits. A head light would probably be a good idea too.

                      • Got in the parts for setting up the LED lights Used a spare PCB board to mount them to...and a lot of tape Used a very small space between them in case it heats up. Need to pick up some adapters so the connecting wires from the bike don't have to be soldered in. The "no load flasher" should be in tomorrow!
79F with two parts bikes (78E and a 79F). Ran it for the first season all the way through the summer. more work to do this Spring!

                            • Todays fun included resin...lots of resin and fiberglass...followed up with some Tin snips, and drilling. Then more resin and foam...and then some very messy grinding to shape the foam. And then lots of cursing over a sewing machine...several broken needles and lots of pulling out threads to redo a seam. Finished late on the seat cover so I will post more pics tomorrow with what it looks like with the new seat cover on it.
