  • I dropped mine and broke the fairing, does that count?

    • Well, last night I bought two hose clamps and used them to secure the back half of my trunk mount to the luggage rack since I can't find "U" bolts small enough to do it in the stock fashion and a considerably older rider showed my why it wobbled (I thought it was normal for the Vetter rack, but it's nice and stable now).

Now, I just gotta paint the replacement trunk lid to match the rest of the stuff, repaint the tank and paint the fairing and I can work on getting the pictures for the next calendar (which I'm going to have to get at least 3 of this time cause of everyone who wants a copy of a calendar with my bike in it (that does include me BTW))

        • CaliRally gettin' close so got ambitious and pulled carb bank so as to re-set float levels. Set them last fall, but confused 32'nds and millimetets confused. Checked them when I pulled the bowels and they were at 1 1/4".........eeeek. It pulled hard and fast up to redline, would lug around in fifth at 1400rpm and smooth roll-on in fifth from there. Being way lean, guess that was advantagous lugging it around. Got away with it here at 5000ft. but at sea level would likely 'toast' it. Run idle screws back in to 2 1/2 turns out initially from the 3 3/4 turns out they were. Will put carb bank on tomorrow, set idle mix and while it's warmed up will check fuel levels while running and see if the re-setting of floats got the fuel level up to close to the 3/16" down from carb body. If the fuel level ended up at a 1/4" down from top, would think that would be better for where it normally is ridden which is 5000-12,500ft. elev. and would'nt think it would be an issue runnin' the PCH highway at sea level for a couple days. Even though sitting in the garage, had to blow all the dust off things before working on it as I haven't ridden it for a couple months. If float settings good will sync, re-set idle mix screws, sync again and final finese on the mix screws. May even have to do a short ride to make sure it's "happy" again.

          • Headlight went off & on etc. & now completely off. Took bucket off last night & wired direct - eliminating 2 sets of plugs - still not on. Think maybe 3 hole plug on back of light maybe coroded inside (the other plugs weren't that great) Also checked ground & it is fine - got rid of 2 pcs of connectors (useless) on that wire. Got a new 3 hole plug today & will try it tonight (already tried with a brand new bulb too) Hopefully that works out - if not bought a swtich today too & will wire it direct for now, still have the extra fuse in TC fuse box. Thats a Winter job to to rip apart harness etc & find wire break or just rewire light totally. Crossing fingers - Dan

            • Dan, it's probably a bad diode in the white trigger wire for the headlight relay. The relay can be bypassed by unhooking the plug and jumping the red/yel and blu/blk wires. The headlight should come on with the key before the bike starts. HTH

                  • Worked on another guy's bike that was for sale on CL. He's the original owner from '79, after he had bought it back from his brother's friend who garaged it for 20 years! It was in good shape, and he even had a receipt from Merriam Cycles, when they did a TON of work on it.

So, I cleaned/sync'd/tuned the carbs (it had sat since last summer), and re-installed the CHERRY original pipes that had been swapped for some MAC turn-outs. Flushed the brakes (the fluid looked like cola), adjusted the clutch and CCT and added air to the tires and forks. All it needs is a new battery, but after a jump, he rode it home this evening.

Makes me feel good to get another one of these machines back on the road!

Unfortunately, on my way home from his house last night, my speedo cable broke! Anyone have a spare one??

I bought the gold paint a while ago intended for my calipers ,it's Dupli color engine paint. I'm polishing a couple of float bowls in the morning and might put them on.

                        • Replaced on of the intake manifolds, as it was broken right through.

Bike still only running on 3 cylinders. #1 pipe is cold to the touch even after a couple of miles.

Checked for fuel flow from the tank by pulling the bowl drain plug, and it is working.

I am getting a little heat in the pipe at idle, but no differnce in performance right to redline, so I think I may have a plugged main.

chrome tops set the black of nicely.

                              • On the set of carbs I just cleaned, someone painted them silver. They painted everything - even the rubber parts and the brass parts. When cleaning them, the carb cleaner stripped a lot of the paint right off. My MNS carbs could use a fresh coat of black paint. What kind of paint should be used to make it so carb cleaner won't strip it off?
