  • VIN Number Reference??

I was under the impression that somewhere on this forum there was a VIN number reference... so that one might determine exactly what a bike was by matching the VIN against a list... or something.

I just spent a good long time searching various terms and came up with nothing. Just a few hints from some posts and replies. I still don't know exactly what I have.

    Is there such a list??

    Thanks in advance.

      Confusing...

      Thanks for your reply...

Going by the list of Vin prefixes, I am left with a puzzle.

      1978 XS1100E 2H7-000101 Macho Maroon
      1979 XS1100F 2H7-020101 Magenta Red, Indigo Blue

Mine starts with 2H7 which is listed as either a 78 or 79, if I'm reading this right.
      And an XS1100 E or F. Which I don't get at all.

So this isnt helping a bit.

I THINK it's a 78 XS1100 SF but that is merely because of many of the parts of the bike. Like the front forks attaching behind the axle, the round instrument guages and head light, the teardrop tank.

I cant even find out what the SF means in xs1100SF.

Maybe I've been at this too long for today after working 14 hrs lol

      Maybe a picture would help.

Looks like a 79SF Special. Check the VIN on the motor and the frame neck, someone could have "switched" things. S means Special and F is the year-79.

There was only a standard in 78.

Okay I will do that when I get back to the house this weekend.
Thanks for clearing up the SF.

...yeah looking at the 1978 Standard, I can't see much resemblence. and doing a google image search for the various models, I have to agree with you.. looks like a 79SF Special.

IT COULD be a "frankenbike". The photo shows TOO MUCH FRAME in front of the fuel tank. Some PO may have hit something, and put the special front end and tank on a standard. 2H7 IS ONLY A STANDARD, the Specials had a different serial number.

XS1100 SF Bob Jones worked on it!

.....yes indeed... so many possibilities. I will start with the frame/engine number this weekend and go from there.

                Thanks

                  Hi Equinox,
you didn't say, is the 2H7 prefix on the engine or on the frame or on both?
If the frame number starts with 2H7 the bike left the factory as a Standard.
If the complete frame and engine numbers are not the same, the engine (or at least, the crankcase) is a transplant.
Like Diver Ray sez, it could well be a Frankenbike.
Which is not necessarily a bad thing.
As most of the parts on XS11s swap between years and models like Lego,
if you don't like the way a particular part looks, put on one you do like.

It was on the TITLE. I haven't looked on the bike yet. I will do that this weekend when I get home.

Sure looks like a 79 xs1100 sf special to me. I don't see anything that would make me think it's another one. It has the plastic cowl over the front of the frame (in front of the tank). Standards don't have them. 79 special forks, seat, grab bar, fender, tail light, tank, bars, exhaust.
ohhhhhhhh but the top of that side cover looks too flat to be a special........maybe it is a standard frame. Need a new pic of the side cover.

Well I was just thinking I need to take some better pics of this thing. So I will be doing that this weekend for sure...

I hadn't mentioned before that all the YAMAHA emblems had been removed and a custom green paint laid down on everything at some point (by a previous owner). The right side cover is the only one with the bike (which I understand is often the case due to the locking mechanism being broken by newbies or something) and there is no emblem on it, nor is there any sign that there ever WAS an emblem on it. (i.e. no holes, etc). It may well not be for this bike.

If you compare the serial number (VIN) on the engine AND the frame to that list, that will give you the "official" model. I think what may be confusing you is:
                            1978 XS1100E 2H7-000101 Macho Maroon
                            1979 XS1100F 2H7-020101 Magenta Red, Indigo Blue

Notice that, after the 2H7, the '78 (E) has 000, then 3 numbers. It may also have just 00, then 4 numbers, depending on how high the serial numbers went that year...

The '79 (F) has only a single 0, then 5 numbers, starting with a 2. That is the difference between the 2 sets of VIN numbers.

Of course, there is also the Canadian version:

                            1979 XS1100F 2H7-110101 Indigo Blue, Magenta Red

                            That VIN starts with 2H7-11.

finally the weekend... now for an update:

I brought the bike out into the sun and took a series of pictures from all angles. I will post them here.

Also, I found the VIN on the ENGINE, which does NOT match the VIN on the TITLE. Can someone tell me where to find the VIN on the FRAME?

Here is the VIN on the ENGINE:

                              3H3-004478

Now, going by the list from that earlier thread, should I assume that at the very least the engine is from a 1979 SF?

                              (( the list ))
