I'm working with Mr OZZ on the design, transforming the photo into a graphic that can be made into a patch, it's almost done, lots of fine detail work, fairly time consuming, and I only have a few hours each night....IF I get to work on it each night....Life does happen!

      Fix, check your PM's!

Well, I don't need an '80 patch, but I do have graphic design experience. Add to that the fact that my stepmother runs an embroidery business. If I can be of any assistance, let me know.

          Just an update, NOT FINAL!!!

          Hey Folks,

Mr Ozz is busy working on adding the OEM STYLED FONTS, the OVAL background/edge and such, along with getting the Copyright permissions before he can actually get with the patchmakers to proceed to production!!

But, I finished the photo/graphic transformation/conversion into basic solid colors that a patchmaker can work with, and here it is on a NEUTRAL light blue...I don't know what color Ozz will decide on. But it's been suggested due to the various grays in the engine and forks/pipes and such, that another color would provide the proper contrast to help bring out the image's details. So...here's the bike graphic...showing the Original draft design with the PHOTO first, then the converted graphic for comparison. I tried to add most of the details that we all know and love/hate about the XS11 without getting too picky!

So..remember, this is just a DRAFT, stay tuned for the final version to be provided by Ozz.

Bike looks great, well done, but I'm not sold on the choice of font, especially the XS1100 Special bit. Shouldnt it be a little closer to the OEM font?

                The Font

I tried to find the font that Yamaha used but not much luck. John Hancock was the closest and it still had considerable differences. I was trying to make the cover badges and have resorted to starting with the JH and manually changing it to fit. Still have a lot to go before I'm satisfied. If anyone finds the correct font that would be great.

I quote TC to bring up my point that the 79SF is the Grandfather of all the specials. The 30th anniversary should read 1979-2009. It did not start in 1980 and 2010 would in fact be the 31st anniversary. I personally think we should have the 79SF representing the Specials on this patch.
I also own a 81LH so I would also be proud to possess a 30 yr patch with a MNS on it. To me the 1980 does not represent the true start of the special run. The MNS's do represent the pinnacle of the styling developments as well as the final runs before the model change.
I think we should try to have a patch for each, as the stuff needed is in the works. Seems that we could get them done at the same time for less money spent too.
I simply think that using 1980 as the marker for a 30 yr anniversary patch is wrong in so many ways.

You can please all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time but your never going to please all of the people all of the time, and you shouldnt even try. Fact is that we all have our own particular preferences, including me, and some are never going to be completely happy with the result (not me). I like it the way it is, just have a preference for a different font. As to the correct year, well it could be argued that 1978 is the correct year as thats when first "special" from Yamaha appeared. Albeit in 650 format, but only a fool would not accept that that's where the 1100 design came from.

Another fact is, that Mr Ozz is doing this one and we should be happy that someone is. Those that dont like either have the choice of not buying one or making their own to their own preferences.

Good work Mr Ozz and rock on.

You do realize that I never said anything negative about the patch. I simply do not like the dates 1980-2010 on there. Whichever bike is pictured is no matter to me, although I do prefer the 79SF. If you read closely you will see that when I mention 1980 I am referring to the year and not the bike (SG). I feel that with the year 1980 being the start point it leaves out those who have 79's. Try explaining why you are riding a 79 special but the patch on your jacket says they started in 1980.
As we are a XS11 forum, I assume we are talking about our bikes and not those from another forum. I also think that these guys are doing an awesome job. With a little forethought put in we could end up with two different patches and a minimum amount of work would have to go into it.
Sorry if anyone is offended but I was trying to add constructive criticism.

                          Looking Good

Nice job TC..I understand the different colors on tank & side plates,,,, I guess its to seperate them from the seat ,Is there anyway to make them black & still show a seperation? If not its ok,I know its hard to design these patches with the limits of having them woven))))) Thx for all the hard work!
We are honoring the 80 & being an owner of both the 79 & 80 special I feel each deserve their own day in the sun because they are each special in their own rite.

Could maybe honor all however... or not,,, I'm happy to have a patch in the works no matter what is decided. Not sure whatthis would look like in print, its prob too much but crossed my mind so thought would share.

From what I can tell, and doing a lot of searching, the fonts used are:

                              The "XS" is Clarendon Extended
The "Eleven Special" / "Midnight Special" is Ballantines Script EF Demi Bold.

I have over 30,000 fonts in my collection but those two. They are corperate fonts. I cannot seem to find them with out paying a ton of money.

I found this website that you can upload a image and it will try to match the font. http://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/

                              Hope that helps you.

Or you could go to Fonthaus.com and right click on the screen image of the respective font and save picture as.... Then open any good graphic design program (I use Corel Draw X4), import the gif, isolate out the individual letters using the mask tools and save each letter as a postscript font file. Then use Corel's built in True Type font designer and combine all the individual letters into one TT font file. Not all the special characters are there, but what the hell, we're only looking for a few letters for our purposes, right? Any good art program should have similair features to Corel Draw, including many of the free ones, but if not there are free TT font design programs out there, so with a combination of two programs you should achieve the same results.

Use the search string at fonthaus to find the right font image.
