    The Silence is DEAFENING!

    Hey Ozz,

I hate to say it but I think the lack of replies/responses kinda tells you that the image of the bike itself is a bit lacking! You would want to have nice contrasting colors to help bring out the details that folks would like to see in an embroidered/woven patch. That's going to look mostly like a silhouette.
Of course if it was black, then it's probably be perfect for the MNS version!

I don't recall if you were around for the first 30th anniv. patch for the 78 that was made. Wayne and Ralph came up with a decent design, but it, too was mostly a single color silhouette and NON-OEM/Yamaha style FONTs for the titles and such. We had some disagreements on it's design merits, I didn't know/realize at the time what making the patch meant to Ralph especially, a bit of a pissing contest ensued. I backed off, they made their patch...all 100 of them sold, but then I brought my design to fruition.. because I felt that the 78..the FIRST in the series of XS11's deserved a bit better looking quality patch that would reflect the PRIDE, Honor, as well as HERITAGE that the First True 1+liter Muscle Bike in America deserved, complete with proper True OEM/Yamaha nameplates/fonts, etc. It was a bit of a hassle to get the proper copyright permits from Yamaha, had to deal with their approval of the design which incorporated the placement of the tuning forks Logo BESIDE the Yamaha Name, like it is on their website, etc.!

But I think and many of the membership also felt that the 2nd patch was up to the imagery and quality that they were looking for and expecting!

Of course I could be wrong, and folks LOVE this one, and are just very busy with their Easter Holiday and such....I don't know for sure!
Perhaps they don't want to upset you, or possibly offend you because they are just wanting "A PATCH" for the special, and would rather accept any patch than critique your work and possibly have you pull out and not make one at all!?!?

So..now that the Elephant in the room is being seen, perhaps others will post with their either positive or possibly negative comments on it's design, looks, etc.!?!? I hope they are HONEST with you in what they say!? I have been!

And I'm still very willing to assist with the graphic work if you want it!?

    Okay, flamesuit is now on!

      Patiently waiting

Yes ,as I hinted, I would like to see more detail. These are very sharp bikes & the patch should reflect that. I figured Oz wasn't finished yet , so I was just waiting to see how he was going to transform his orig idea. I have confidence in him . He's already way ahead of me,no way I could've designed his rough draft , more or less improve on it

Thanks T.C. for the constructive criticism. I want to make a proper patch that the members here want and be proud to display.

So speak up everyone you will not offend me.

Yes T.C. I would like your help. I am having issues with bringing out the details of the XS.

This was what I thought about before I tweaked the image of the bike.
But I was unsure of the raw picture of the the bike on the patch. I also want to bring out more detail of the badging.

        Thanks again T.C.

        QRFan,

I agree, it really should have more detail.

          I vote untweaked

What other options Do we have besides embroidery ? That looks great untweaked LMAO Embroideried Patches are really nice & prob the best choice.I wonder ,however,if it's possible to get that much detail or if there might be another method for making a printed patch that would be just a durable ? I have some printed patched but I haven't washed them to see how they stand up. TC did you guys investigate any other options besides embroidery ?

The 30th anniversary patch for the XS 1100 Standard was a woven patch.

From the research I have done you can have embroidered, woven, or printed.
The first patch was done woven to bring out the fine detail that's not possible with regular embroidery unless you make them like 6" wide. (Thanks for that info T.C. )

I am not sure of the printed patch and how long they would last. I have a feeling that a woven patch will last much longer.

              A little history and images.

              Okay folks,

Here's the 1st 78E patch design showing the Silhouette:

Here's the actual patch with some image enhancement thanks to WildKat, it's an embroidered patch as stated about 6" wide:

Here's the old 78E patch that was offered many years ago, embroidered, note the lack of details:

Here's the photo image of the 78E that used:

Here's the rough design of the bike from that image:

Here's the final patch design, complete with OEM FONTs and such:

And here's the actual WOVEN sewout of the final design, note the amount of detail in the patch vs. the OLD patch!

Okay, OZZ, if you can email me the hi res copy of your latest patch that you posted, then we'll get to work on the transformation into an image using at the max 16 colors that the patchmakers can better utilize to bring out the details of the image vs. trying to use an actual PHOTO image.

                      OK... here goes

To be honest, I'm not impressed with any of the proposed designs. The silhouette version reminds me of the tin 'tracing' we did in grade 7 shop class (so very long ago) and, the font used does not do the patch justice.

As I mentioned in my previous post on this topic, I think that we would be missing a prime opportunity if we did not use the Midnight Special version as the focus of this patch. Its historic stature and stylistic uniqueness, not only among XS11's, but also Yamaha motorcycles and the motorcycle industry, gives it a prominence that has remained to this day.

There is nothing that is 'special' about the '80 SG, unless, of course, you think that the grab handle is the cats a$$ err, meow. Besides, the MNS IS a Special. It's just a, uh, 'special' special! As for the '80 G well, been there done that. And, producing an 'anniversary' patch just because it's 30 years since 1980, well....

                        xsilerating,

Thanks for your honesty. The patches I displayed are just a few ideas. T.C. is working on the bike part of the patch to bring out the details the bike deserves.

I have a few ideas to represent the MNS in the patch also.

                          Represent both.

The Midnight special is one sharp bike & I would sport a patch for it however I wouldn't own one. It's not my preference. I like the look of the sg much better. There's no reason it has to be mns or sg competition..to each their own respectfully. Let's do a patch for each ?
