Growing up, we had an old blue Homelite that my grandpa had used. I cut chord after chord of wood. Literally, hundreds of them. If you're from the south.. that would be a rick x 2. I've heard many people say that those old blue Homelites were the best saw ever built. I don't know... but back in the 90's they re-introduced them, so I bought one. It's been a good saw and still cuts well, but it's not the saw the old one was.

Today's saws use chain speed to cut. This Homelite just uses torque and muscles though everything. It'll run about 20 minutes on a tank of gas.. which is fine, because you're ready to put that heavy SOB down. The Stihl saws we use at work work well, but you can force them into the cut and stop the chain pretty easily.

Stihl Chainsaws Rule!

I have two Stihl saws. My old 041 Super I found at a garage sale for 25 bucks. Took it home and rebuilt it with a high compression racing piston, and a new jet kit for the carburator. It has a 20 inch Oregon bar on it and I can bury it in green wood and not get that baby to stall!

Saw two is an early 80's model 038. Engine is all stock, and has a 16 inch bar. That was before they had all the spark arrestors, and eco-friendly BS carbs, and no horsepower. Man that sucker really cuts. The Stihl saws of today are a far cry from the early ones. Kind of like the XS11. I get to use them a few times a year. We still burn about two chords of wood a year. Old chainsaws, and old Yamahas, coincidence?

Down here we are not even allowed to burn piles of leaves in autumn. Local council can impose fines. Friend two blocks away lit bonfire couple of years back and had fire brigade arrive to put it out and told him not to light another one or he would be fined. Admittedly this bloke does get a bit carried away and fire was rather large

As for knives, not allowed to carry in public, friend was fined $1100 for having Leatherman on belt several years ago. Next we will be charged for not puckering up on demand.

Mine is a Poulan 18" "Wild Thing" that I picked up at Lowes. It was only $149, but it cuts like a much more expensive model. I have run a few Husqvarnas that were very good, and I think this Poulan might cut nearly as well. I am guessing it isn't as durable though.

Yeah, I went that way when we had our Monster ice storm that took out almost every tree in the state! The Poulan cut like a bandit steals... for a few days.
It has one major flaw... that stupid plastic auto chain adjuster! It won't hold up, sorry to say. I took mine back and paid the big bucks for the $500 Husky, after I "saw" 6 others at the return desk w/ the same problem!.
But, word of advice... the Husky Rancher, (their biggest one) has a flaw, too! There's an "anti-kickback" guard at the bottom of the clutch wheel... (a little aluminum bracket thing...) and they've got a problem keeping the chains on... if you fail to remove that bracket when you first open the package... and the chain ever jumps... goodbye $35.00 chain. It's ruined. Went through 3 saws and 4 chains before I removed mine. Ironically, hasn't jumped since... (go figure!) Other than that... awesome saw! Husky makes good stuff.
My lawn tractor's also a new Husky. Love it.
I bought Husky because when I researched them, I found they only make 2 brands... Husky & a Husky for Craftsman. AMP makes nearly 80% of all other outdoor equipment, especially since they purchased Murray. They just mask the same junk with a lot of different names.
So far, (3 years) I haven't been sorry I took the Poulan back and exchanged it!

I guess it is like most anything else.... Once you get used to it..

I used to change stadium lights in the ball fields and go up 80 feet in the fire dept. bucket truck. Never bothered me to lean out of the darned thing and work on the lights but I couldn't get up on an eight foot scaffold. I just knew I was going to step off the thing..
