  • Hi Guys

Just a brief intro from a new member, although I was a member for a short time some years ago (around the time TKat starting building his fork braces, are these still available by the way?)

I'm 48 years old and live in the South Island on New Zealand and have owned a 1980SG for the last ten years. I bought it as a basket case and rebuilt it with what i could find at the time. It's all original but some things are showing thier age, like me. Two weekends ago I was returning home from a Rally and had successfully travelled another 500 trouble free kilometres when the unthinkable happened. I slid on some greasy road at an intersection and the bike fell over on me, breaking my left leg. (and seriously denting my pride). I was 10 kilometres from home and travelling at about 40 Kilometres an hour. 30 year veterens of the road don't make these kind of mistakes. As a result I'm now looking for a left hand front footpeg, a left front blinker, a round rev counter, a complete new headlight and both mounting brackets.

First real ride of the season for me, and the last.

    Incredible place

Hi B.Walker,,,I couldn't help but notice your residing place of Invercargill. THe famous homeplace of the infamous motorcycle racer of the movie, The Worlds Fastest Indian. Great movie and great people in your city. We need more of the salt of the earth folk in the USA. Anyway, Ebay.com is great,, but hopefully a few members will chip in and help you out. Andreas Weiss?, spelling could be off, but a fellow member with tons of parts, could be worth a private message to. He has helped many members with parts to keep our xs bikes going. Come on guys,,,,lets help out B.Walker with some parts!!!!! Regards, Mike in San Diego

You can PM Andreas for parts, and you can also get some of the parts off the 650/750/850 bikes. The SG will have the round headlamp of the 850/750 models, so they are easy to find. The mount ears can be universal. or the same 850/750 models. Turn signals are also the same, so that just leaves the footrest and the tach. Andreas may be able to help with both!
Welcome back to the site, and I hope the leg heals quickly!
PS, TKat is STILL building the brace, but you need to hurry. The price is going up to about $110US shipped "over seas".

As a young 16 year old apprentice I got to know old Burt in his last couple of years of life. My boss was a friend of his and had a couple of bikes as well. a 1924 Triumph Coventry and a 1952 model 88 Norton, which I learnt to ride on. Burt had some fascinating stories, (and some incredibly dirty living habits) and up until about a month before he died in 78 he was still scrounging scrap aluminium to make pistons out of.

I'm now lucky enough to count Neville Hayes as a personal aquantance of mine and have access to Burts bikes anytime, some of which are on display in the Hayes family hardware store here in town.

Thanks for the advice on parts supplies, it'll be a week or two before I start looking in earnest but no harm in laying the groundwork now.

          Burt Munro,,,,legend on any bike

Hi Brian, thanks for the link. It is fascinating reading all the history of the man and the machines he created. I hope all the xs'rs read the link and follow the dream of Burt. If, when, I get down to your paradise, it will definately be a stop at the hardware store to check out Burt's bikes. For those of you who haven't seen the movie, The Worlds Fastest Indian, it is a big must see for anyone who owns a road bike. I think I have watched it at least 6 times and it never gets boring..............good luck with the body and bike, Mike in San Diego

            Hey b.Walker5

I have a headlight assembly here somewhere it might be black though. It was given to me so you can have it just pay the shipping. I'm sure that will cost you enough . Send your address and I will find out how much it will cost to ship. It will take 6 to 12 weeks regular mail to reach you if you want it faster it will cost even more.

Hi All. I've finally had a chance to hobble out to the garage and survey the damage to my bike for the first time since it attacked me, and its not as bad as my horse riding wife would have me believe. She told me the rev counter was shot, even handed me the remains of the shroud, turns out it's the speedo instead. Good thing horses don't have guages. The indicator is repairable I think, just needs the threaded shaft replaced. The headlight surround and brackets are shot and the footpeg is torn right off from the mount, but other than the usual broken clutch levers and scraped paint it looks okay. Did discover that a previous owner had laid it down at some stage and used lots of plastic filler to rebuild some engine covers. Anybody got a complete speedo in a chrome housing they want to part with?

                  Hi
Thanks for the support. Unfortunately Andreas doesnt have the parts I need. I may have found a headlight in Canada but dont yet know how much it'll cost to get it here.

I note from your signature that you have done the 750 final drive conversion. How much difference did it actually make? I have one from an old 7502D I had years ago and have thought about fitting it many times, but never had the nerve too.

                    Hi there,
open this link and follow the decision tree to see Canada Post offshore parcel rates:-
                    http://www.postescanada.ca/Tools/pg/default-e.asp
My son did this when mailing his GF's extra stuff back to Australia and got within a dollar of what the Post Office actually billed him. (1.5 cu. ft. package, mebbe 15lbs for $120) A headlamp inna box surely has to be smaller and lighter than that.
