      Helmet Safety

I tried posting this to the 'What Kind' helmet thread, but the link didn't insert properly. Below is the link (sorry, you'll have to type it in) to a series of tests done on relative safety of DOT-only vs Snell rated helmets. The link:

      http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/ge...iew/index.html

Very interesting reading, and basically it said the generally cheaper DOT-only helmets offer better protection that the supposedly superior Snell rated units. Read this and decide for yourself, but personally I'll never buy another Snell helmet...

        Crazy Steve,

Very interesting article. They make a good case that the Snell approval actually makes the helmets less effective and their test data certainly seemed to support it. I thought Snell's response was kind of lame. Certainly makes you think before buy another helmet. Thanks for the info.

Do you have your DONOR card?

          Hey folks,

I care, but I don't really care if folks choose to wear a helmet or not. But what I do care about is the availability of donor organs and such, and so I ask/urge EVERY motorcyclist to obtain and sign their organ donor cards and carry them with you. Some states have the option of having it as part of their license permit. I know if I get wiped out, and am brain dead.....shut up PROM , I want them to harvest as much as they can use from my mortal coil, because the rest will just be going up/down in smoke anyways! I'll be blown to the winds as my last act!

I use a full face in the winter, and modular in the summer. My Nolan flip is drafty and cold

If I can find a flip helmet that doesn't freeze my face, I would just use it.

I have an HJC CL-Max modular. It was a reasonable price, low wind noise but could use a bit better seal on the face shield for cold weather riding. The flip-up is nice.

I found a handy item to alleviate fogging of my faceshield in the cold. I got an O2 mask (used for respiratory treatments) and left enough hose attached to hang just below the chin area of the helmet. This directs all my breath outside the helmet. The only downside is condensation inside the mask.

See my previous post on the first page.
In addition to what was stated there, I am also impressed with how well the lid seals out both wind and noise. The shield too, has a very good seal around it and worked well at keeping out the wind and cold in late season riding. I rode right up until the snow came and never once had any complaints about the cold. (I think my head was probably the warmest part of my body. )

Ventilation is also good and, while fogging is kept to an absolute minimum (it was only noticeable when stopped for any length of time i.e. traffic light), it was easily eliminated by leaving the shield open a crack (or, if you prefer, an RCH or two ). Even at that, infiltration of wind and cold was barely detectable and easily eliminated by tightly closing the shield once underway.

When I tried it on, it fit rather well and was quite comfortable.
That is one of the ones that I tried on and was dissapointed. There was a massive pressure point on my forehead. I even tried the xl size. Had more room all over but same pressure point on the forehead. Apparently zox must design their buckets for someone with a pumkin head and I must have an egg shaped head. So I am still looking.

There are several anti-fog products out there. One thing you might do is find a scuba dive shop somehwere. They will have a variety of anti fogging solutions for dive masks that should work fine for your visor.

Crazy Steve, all I can say is wow. That's a great article to read. Very informative and a very interesting read. I'm not so concerned about whether my helmet has a snell rating now.

I currently have a full face HJC, but I'm seriously looking at a modular. As a smoker and a glasses wearer, I think a modular might be more convenient. That $60 one that xsilerating posted a link to looks like something I might just invest in. We'll have to see.

I've got an HJC full face helmet which I wear on long rides or when it's not too hot and humid. I have a 1/2 helmet version, also HJC that I wear for rides along the beach or local rides when it's July and August.

I find the full face helmet to be more comfortable on long rides partly because it cuts out all the wind noise.

My days of riding without a helmet ended a loooong time ago.

                              Harry;
You and I must share the same 'egg' shaped noggin . I had the same experience with 'Zox' and, while I ended up buying one of their half helmets, it was done so with regret . At the time, the end of the riding season was fast approaching and I was in dire need of a helmet . Selection was obviously severely limited and the 'Zox' was the only one I could find that was at least the right size, albeit with the same pressure point problem . Fortunately, I only had to use it for a short time .

Next purchase was a 'Bell' half helmet and, while I had the same experience with the large size, the XL fits pretty good, as long as the ear pads are left in to help fill in the sides of the helmet .

Hmmm, guess that explains why I have so many helmets at my disposal .

Thankfully I don't have that problem with my current brain bucket .
