  • what is the highest power pellet gun?

i can't pump, it can't leak, and has to be deployed on a moments notice, but a real gun in going jail time in the city...

would any have enough range to require a scope or laser?

deep flesh penetration would be prefered

short of a 22 calibre, rifle, what type of gun/ rifle will put a hurtin on nightime racoon, skunks and possums,

and do they learn a lesson, or would they come back for more?

    comments?

I have a Beeman with a scope. Break barrel loading, doesn't require pumping and fires pellets at just under 500 feet/second requiring no license or permits.

        Air Rifle

Go to Cabelas' website, they have RWS, Beeman, Gamo, and a lot of others. I've been told there are air rifles powerful enough to kill a fully grown Bison. The guy that told me about that is deeply into airguns.

Yes one round at a time. I believe you can, I have for short periods of time with no noticeable loss in power. They probably do but you will likely need a permit or license for it. I'm not sure how your laws differ from ours. I have no problem killing squirrels with mine. I have never tried to shoot anything any bigger but I'm sure a racoon or skunk would get the message loud and clear!

I've been as far as 50 feet. Head shot is the best but a torso shot will take them out too. I've killed more tin cans with mine than squirrels or rats.

with the head shot, so they run away and die later? or die right there?

If you shoot an animal in the guts/intestines they will run/walk/crawl away and then die and you don't have to deal w/ the carcass. Shoot them in the brain they die on the spot. Heart/lungs they don't go far and die.
The only lesson coons/opossums and such learn is to avoid humans. If you don't want them around you have to kill them.
Antifreeze works good. I've heard a bottle of aspirin dissolved in milk works good too.

I have a RWS model 52, 1100 fps., but for most varmints I use a slingshot with marbles. With a little practise you can roll them pretty easily and they will run away so you don't have to drag them off, Of course after a few hits they can't be coaxed back even with the most tempting baits.

Sorry! I got off the subject there. The RWS has a side cocking lever, just one easy to pull is all it takes.

If you want to explore the limits of airguns take a look at
                            http://www.airgunsofarizona.com/.
You can have charged airguns that you won't believe...
I recently had a friend who took out a raccoon that was fighting to get into his apartment at 1:30 am. Used a .177 pellet. I had best not discuss the entire episode here but it was stone dead in one hit.
Be prepared to answer a bunch of questions if anyone sees or hears you shoot an air rifle inside most city limits. In many cities they are considered firearms. Airguns powerful enough to take small game are loud! If they are fast enough the pellet will be supersonic and there will be the unmistakable "crack" when fired.
Unless you have a need for a coonskin hat I advise my buyers to find the cheapest paintball gun you can find and keep paintballs in the fridge not the icebox (freezing will break them). They will be stiff and the racoons won't like them very much. They do remember where they were when they get smacked. If anyone complains, you have a leg to stand on.

Also not mentioned here.. and don't laugh.. but blow guns, with some practice, will take out anything you have mentioned. I got to where I could hit about a 2 inch group at @ 60-70 feet and sink the darts so deep into a thick telephone book, that it required pliars and some considerable tugging to get them out. Once you get good, they make a small, hard, sharp, plastic broadhead to attach to the darts. You can keep one ready at all times.. very quiet.. and very legal. They will generally pass completely through whatever you shoot in the torso.

If going the antifreeze route, for some reason, the animals prefer used antifreeze. I don't know what happens to it chemically, but I've never had any luck with new stuff. Be prepared for them to "Expire" right next to the container they were drinking it out of though. I would warn the neighbors of your intentions so they can keep any family pets from becoming an unintended target.
