Blowguns in California are a serious no-no. Thay can be had with round balls but get caught with one using a steel dart and I believe it is a felony.

Here's an interesting tid bit. The German mercenary troops fighting with the British Army in the revolutionary war used pneumatic sniper rifles to shoot American officers from up to 300 yards away. The use of poisons such an antifreeze is considered animal cruelty and can net you a big fine and or jail time.

YES, anything that someone else COULD consider to be cruel to animals can land you in jail. And blood trails are about impossible to cover up/hide to the trained eye. Be careful who you let in on your secret. One neighbor might approve while another might not.

          Sorry.. should have checked..

"Blowguns and Blowgun Darts are prohibited in the state of California, and Mass and in the city of NYC. "

          And also for others...

          "AIRGUNS:

are prohibited in Chicago and Mortan Grove Il.; Philadelphia, PA; Buffalo, Bronx, Brooklyn, Long Island City, Manhatten, Queens, New York City and Stanten Island, NY. New Jersy residents need Permit. Michigan residents need permit for pellet pistols, pellet rifles under 30" in length and any .22 caliber pellet guns"

I guess they'll ban sticks and rocks next? That just kills me that you could ban a little Daisy BB gun... lol.

            Poison

Antifreeze is irresistable to your neighbor's pets and it is a very painful and slow death. Your neighbors will not like it and jail time is assurred. Opposums are rather stupid and will come back and skunks will leave a stink when hit that will last wwaaaaayy too long. Best is to be a good neighbor and don't leave anything out there to attract them.

I have a RWS mod. 45 .177 cal that will do every thing a .22 will do out to 70 yards and is capable (the rifle) of shooting the same hole at 30 yards. I have killed racoons, cats and dogs with it. There are cleaning pellets that you can double up and use to run dogs and suck off with that just smart like he:: one dog came back and made the mistake of growling at me, it got lead pellet the next time. It is really very quit to, all you here is the spring going ahead. Lots of fun to shoot and cheap. I like cheap.

if all else fails, get yourself a live trap (you can sometimes borrow them from your local SPCA) and carry away what you don't want to have around.

Only problem though, is a lot of jurisdictions only allow minimum distances to re-locate the animal (some as little as 150 feet ).

                    I knew a guy once........
Anyway, he kept a live trap out on his patio, and every morning he would pick it up and drop it in his swimming pool.
Come back later and empty it in the dumpster.

He used to have a cat problem.

Hope he had a good pool filter.

well these varmits we have are city slickers, we caught 2, took alot of feeding outside the cage to set up a pattern, they got wise and wouldn't feed in the trap, well it's time to meet the maker.

Are the critters causing you a problem? Are they in your yard durring the daylight hours?
I have people coming to me because of neighbors cats or raccoons in their yards. Most of the time when I ask them what they are doing the answer is "Nothing, I just don't like them there".
A call to the local animal control may get someone out with a trap to relocate the problem out of the city.
Had a neighbor who thought the neighborhood cats were eating her pond goldfish. Animal control took 9 possums from her yard in 11 days. Problem solved.

                            Varmits

They my only be varmits, but if you are going to kill them it should be a clean kill. Personally, I do a ton of hunting, but I don't get my jollies out or watching an animal flop around in it's death thros. Back in the 70's I used to spend a lot of fall nites chasing hound around while raccoon hunting. I also ran a trapline. Conibear type traps (size 220) will kill a raccoon on the spot if used properly. Set up a narrow entrance or path the raccoon can only get into from one end. Put a can of tuna (opened of course) at the dead end and stand the trap up in the opening. You could use a large cardboard box with a brick on top for this. cut an opening a little smaller than the trap and put it on th inside. Make sure the trap trigger is off to one side and on the top, and that the spring safeties are off. Use them, my Dad found out why the hard way. When the raccoon walks thru the opening, it's head will also enter the trap. It usually breaks the neck or fractures the skull. Brownies work well as bait. Fewer cats. It WILL kill dogs and break hands if you go this route, a warning can be written on the box. If you have small kids DON'T try this. The earlier warn should help you figure that out as to why. It's quite, discrite and legal in most places. I killed a 36 pound raccoon that measured 48 inches, skinned, with a conibear trap. That was back in the 70's when the hides were worth $45- 60 bucks. Good money for a high school kid in the Carter era. Yes you have to handle the body, but part of taking responsiblity for killing something. Better than poisoning an animal so it crawls off somewhere you don't have to see it die or be dead.

                              antifreeze

New antifreeze has the chemical (ethylene glycol) taken out of it specifically so it won't kill pets, animals, and small children that get into it. The sweet smell is what attracts them. Most new antifreeze has propylene glycol in it, which is "generally recognized as safe" by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in food. But this does not mean you can safely drink it.

Short and sweet: new antifreeze won't kill them like old antifreeze.

If you want to poison them I'd try a good bait, peanut butter or milk or something similar and use LOTS of rat poison. However as has been stated, this is non-selective, you can't control who or what gets into it and gets poisoned.

I've been shoppin' myself, Mason, and ..

WalMart has two models at roughly 1000 ft/sec. I have seen some of them in the 1300 ft/sec range but, either way, that's powerful enough to take out a 'coon. We have 'em here and they can be damn nasty and insistent and along with the squirrels, who trash out the non-citrus fruit crops, we have to control 'em !! Neighbor's been doin' it, but this year, I'm joining in.

One of the models is a Beeman with a extra .22 cal barrel and the other is a Crossman .... both well known brands ...both break barrels .... both have scopes of 3 or 4 power. Price range 100 to 125 bucks.
