California XSives "Yosemite" Rally

You take off for a couple of days ...

CA 58 toward Bakersfield, CA 99 toward Sacramento, CA 44 toward Wasco/Paso Robles, hit 101 south for 20 miles, then on to CA 58 toward Santa Margarita.

Jerry, you can take Hwy 58 to Santa Margarita. I've never been over the 58 from Bakersfield to the coast and Google says it's a half hour longer than going up to the 46 and back down 41 to the 101. At the end of the day it depends on how much time and energy you have.

... the route would be ... PCH (1), north to the 101 to Santa Barbara

Ralph, the PCH north from Santa Monica is a nice ride but a lot of the view is blocked by houses or the road is inland a just a tiny bit too far to see the sea.

I can meet up with you in Camarillo, Oxnard or Ventura if you want to take PCH all the way up but after going through Malibu you should take Malibu Canyon or Kanan Road over the mountains to the 101 north and head into Thousand Oaks.
You get a fun ride with some spectacular views from the tops of either of those passes and, if you like tunnels, both roads have some tunnels to ride through.

We can meet up in Thousand Oaks, then take the 101 north over the pass from Thousand Oaks/Newbury Park down into Camarillo and Oxnard and Ventura. The pass isn't as much fun as it used to be before Cal Trans fixed everything but it still has a decent view.

I think Scott, 3Phase is meeting us up a little higher up the freeway, I sent an email to you with cell number, so maybe give him a call to let him know where to meet.

Taking PCH to the 101 would put you little further north than Thousand Oaks but whatever you folks decide to do is fine.

My Bro inlaw is so close to getting his bike, just picked up, ready for the rally he is twisted.

I'll be staying in our motor home in Paso Robles outside the house of some family friends. We should arrive there afternoon/ early evening. Dunno yet if I'll be down for dinner Fri. night or not. I hope to be.

It's been a long day. I talked to Reffi and we're meeting at the Seaward Avenue Denny's restaurant in Ventura before heading up to Santa Margarita.

I've finished the post-break-in PMCS on my bike after the San Diego trip and some of the prep for the rally this weekend. I got a new Dunlop Elite II back tire for the bike because the old tire was bald. I wound up sliding around and almost highsided a couple of times coming down from the mountians in San Diego. I checked and shimmed the valves; adjusted the timing chain , the valves survived the chain adjustment and the engine started so I checked the ignition timing; reinstalled the voltmeter and generally finished up a bunch of little mechanical and electrical jobs that needed to be done with this 'tuit before I synch the carburetors and put the fairing back on the bike.

It's been a good day!

Well guys, it looks like I will not be able to make it to the West coast get together this year. Work has been slow and some expenses have been high and there isn't any way I can justify it to SWMBO. I could ride the credit card, but then there is the added expense when I get back. I sold all my model airplanes and stuff and was gonna use the money for the trip, but "you know who" had different ideas about where the money was gonna go. I have been waiting to the last minute to make the decision in case something changed, but it hasn't yet and it don't look promising.

You guys have a good time, take pics and keep the rubber side down.

PS I'm really bummed and would have liked to meet all you guys, and girls and new people.

Well Richard, I’m disappointed to. Ray and I are going to work on getting a rally together in the Clear Lake area in the fall. I know it’s a bit of a ride for you SoCal types, but maybe you’ll be in better shape by then.
But on the up side, I’m good to go, and Ray and I will be riding down with a XS11 rider who I discovered on one of my floor jobs. Very interesting guy: a bachelor who works half the year and spends the other half year traveling to places like Patagonia and New Guinea.
We should be arriving around mid to late afternoon on Friday.

The Rally's Over

Well, the rally is over, for any of you non-attendees who might be monitoring this thread. See my ride report for particulars. SWMBO left the rally site at about 0945 and arrived home at about 1645. We had a fairly long break for lunch and fuel in Oxnard then it was stop and go traffic from the 101 / 405 junction to (nearly) LAX (typical for any day in LA). Once it eased we made some time untili a final potty / rest break in Torrance, then home.

I just got back and read about Ivan getting unpaid medical leave. I haven't had time to look at any pictures or video.

Soccer4m and Eagle Tom were headed down the 5 freeway a while ago and if everything has gone well they should be home pretty soon, too.

I has a great time at the rally -- fantastic and the bike ran fine! Well, okay, the bike was fine until yesterday during the ride back from the coast. I discovered that one rear brake pad is worn down to the metal and the other one isn't much better. I had no rear brake for the third phase of the ride yesterday and all the way back home today but I made it home safely. Hopefully, Kym and I will see you, Mike and Tom this weekend when we ride down to San Diego.

Hey, Ralph, I'm glad to see you and Vicky made it home safely, too! We took a leisurely cruise over the 58, down the 33 to the 166, then over to the 5 up and over the Grapevine and down to the San Fernando Valley. The wind was pretty bad over Tejon Pass.

The sign at the beginning of the 58 in Santa Margarita says, "Next Services 82 miles." Tom's bike only goes about 85 or 90 miles and he's out of gas but he made it to a Shell station in Oildale with almost two entire tenths of a gallon to spare!

Home again, home again!

Ray and I had such a nice ride through Big Sur on the way down we decided to ride back up via the same route. Besides Jerry and Brandon, both from Colorado, had never been through Big Sur, so we had the extra kick of getting a vicarious high from them! Roo (XSbobber,) come along too on his (what else,) bobbed special. Matt, (Drag XS,) started out with us, but was last seen passing us flat out, head down on tank, as we stopped to take pictures.

After a leisurely ride with several photo- op stops we arrived in Monterey at Fisherman's Wharf where my better half was taking a break from her steady gig doing quick sketch portraits. After a calamari and beer break and a quick tour of the wharf Ray and I escorted the rest of the guy's back to Hwy 1 south, where we headed north for a quick jam home to Santa Cruz.
And this is just the ride home report!

It may take a day or two for me to post my report. I've got lot's of photo's, digital and film, to process and post but I've also got a lot of business to take care of. When I do post it will be in its proper place in the Ride Reports. Look for it there!
