  • Michael, I'm a follower of the "morning is some time before noon" philosophy.

Really, we'll probably be up and around before 8 and finished with a group breakfast in camp by 9 or so. Then a ride and lunch on the road. We'll grill a group dinner after we get back from the road trip. Our plans are fluid due to the fact that we never stick to a plan.

Ray, I like the idea of the Nacimiento road because it gets us up the PCH a ways and lets us ride back toward camp in a loop, finishing up on 46 between Cambria and Paso Robles, which is a fine road and rich in wineries. But a long haul of rough road is a recipe for disaster for a group our size. There is a wealth of possible rides in the area, so no need to take risks, but risks have an upside, too.

BTW, I'll bring wood for an OUTDOOR FIRE we get to have at this KOA. Also, the pool is ready to go, and there is fishing withing half a mile. My son will be all over that, no doubt.

Oh, and I'm still bringing my own trash can.

    • Perfect, I'll roll up around then for sure. I'd look through all the posts for the camp site details but I'm pretty sure I would miss all the XS's sitting around.

If we are going to take the 46 west there is this little road tucked away on it called Old Creek road which is a site two lane that has some great turns to it and leads to a great view of the Whale Rock Resevior, cool photo op. Keep following it and it takes you to HWY 1 which you can take south and then take the 41 East from Morro Bay which is a relaxing stretch back to the 101 in Atascadero. It's not a long ride by most means but as a local, that would be a strong suggestion to put on the winging it list.

Roo, we'll be heading up there on Friday, June 12th. Can we meet up with you at Pea Soup Anderson's or ?

I have to look at Ralph's files and see what he's dug up for a route. However we get there it should be fun!

            • LoHo,
I think we may have one more rider from my area. Ran into a nice guy on a Honda V-twin who is up for the ride. I've emails him the links and details, so we'll see if he can make it. It WOULD be nice to ride down with more than the usual two bikes.

              • The more the merrier, Ray. I may wind up trailering, as it seems Kelly may have to stay in town. And it's not even a Harley, although it is leaking a little oil...

                • Still on...

I visited the orthopedic doctor on Tuesday, hamstring is badly pulled but does not require any intervention. I can sorta get around now. I am hoping that by by the time Brant and I leave Colorado (June 10) I will be a bit more mobile.

Arrival will be on Thursday, the 11th. I will have to stop frequently to stretch the leg, so it won't be a particularly fast transit, but it looks like I will be there. Unless I fall or twist the leg in the next 5 days....

                    • Right on, Jerry! Are you taking the 80 to California? Whichever way you go take your time and have some fun.

I think I have my bike fixed -- finally! I'm making a test run down to San Diego tomorrow morning. Hopefully I'll be riding all weekend, not in the garage shimming gears.

                      • Brant and I will be heading west out of Colorado on I-70, pick up I-15 south to Las Vegas, stay first night there. 558 mile day. Leave I-15 on CA 58 toward Bakersfield, CA 99 toward Sacramento, CA 44 toward Wasco/Paso Robles, hit 101 south for 20 miles, then on to CA 58 toward Santa Margarita. Only about a 430 mile day. Directions per Mapquest, 978 miles from my place. Basically reverse the route for the trip home.

                        • Meeting Up

I need to hear from you guys in the San Diego contingent regarding our plans. I don't want to be a czar over this, but SWMBO is very focused as this is her first trip in 27 years.

Our thoughts are the if you guys ride up to our home from San Diego, you'll be about ready for a pit stop and refueling by the time you reach our neck or the woods. (It's about 85 miles from our house to our daughter's place and she lives near the Mission Valley Mall.) There are three gas stations just one mile from our house (as you go back to the freeway: Shell, Chevron, Union 76). Leaving our house, the route would be 405 North to the 10, then West to PCH (1), north to the 101 to Santa Barbara, the 154 over the pass to the 101 again and on to the 58 for Santa Margarita or (for us) the 46 for Paso Robles. (There is an alternative: If you take Foxen Canyon Road off the route 154, it's a back country two-lane that winds past two or three very well known wineries - Fess Parker, Zaca Mesa, etc. It returns to the 101 around Santa Maria. I would say that the extra loop would depend on timing more than anything else.)

SWMBO and I like to stop on a fairly regular basis (I alway say every hour or 100 miles, whichever comes first.). I know that we are all riding bikes with differing fuel capacities and consumption rates, so I would propose that the thirstiest bike makes the rules. My bike is good for about 154 miles per fillup. SWMBO has always had fuel when my warning light comes on. When I was riding my '80G, I just stopped every hour and filled it up 'cause I never got better than 35 mpg.

Anyway, sorry to be so long-winded but those are my thoughts. The ten-day forecast for the area looks outstanding. There is a 20% chance of precip in the Malibu / Ventura area for Friday. IF it starts to look ugly, we can blow off the coastal route for Friday and take the 5 to the 58 (ugly but efficient).

By the way, whoever lent me the tire tool to hold my footpeg last year, it is in my tank bag for return to its rightful owner.

                          Ralph

Damn, hope you didn't hurt him Ray! But seriously, a v twin? Sounds too much like a Harley to me! Just kidding! If you are on two wheels you are a brother to me. Ride on!

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"

                              • Hey Reffi

Hey Reffi,,,,we can come by your area, anytime friday morn. Just give us a place and early time to meet and we are there. It should be early enough so we can arrive at a leisurely pace at the rally. One hour stops are fine with us,,,old folks like us need liquid in and out breaks regularly. I think Scott, 3Phase is meeting us up a little higher up the freeway, I sent an email to you with cell number, so maybe give him a call to let him know where to meet. I am semi-clueless on L.A. roadways. It sounds like the weather will be great. Anything is good, I am on vacation for a week. My Bro inlaw is so close to getting his bike, just picked up, ready for the rally he is twisted. Thanks to Scott, 3Phase the bike lives again. Man, these things are indestructible and fairly easy to fix usually. SO, Reffi, get the wife primed, bring along all her wishes and no doubt she will enjoy every mile. See you,,,let me know asap time, pickup spot,,,,,Mike in Sun Diego
