exhaust coatings

finally done

I finally have my exhaust done.

Here are the rusted before pics.

After some sanding, grinding to get rid of the heavy pitting, 2 coats of VHT ceramic Header grey primer. Then 3 coats of VHT Ceramic Header aluminum paint. This is how they came out.

Interesting--Got more info on thgis paint?? Is it hi-temp?? Same as normal black zorst paint?

Ken - Thats what the winter is for. Alot of frame and body work to be done.


Chrisso - I am sorry, I am not familar with the zorst paint.

The VHT paint is rated for 1300- 2000 F ( 704 - 1093 C ).

I am still trying to find a way to convince the chromers to rechrome them for me. I was thinking that if I spot welded the pipes shut and then handed them over to the chromers they might do them. That way the chromium would not be contaminated. After they have been rechromed, cut the welds off

Geezer - I picked it up at my local auto parts store. Autozone. I have seen it at Advance Auto Parts also. Runs about $7.50 a can. Make sure to follow the directions closely. It does make a difference. The paint is soft until you cure it.

Why not get them Ceramic Coated...that stuff wont fall off like chrome-and its cheaper; I got my headers HRC coated for under $200...friendlier for the environment too apparently

I have never had chrome come off. It only pits if it is not kept clean. Will ceramic coatings damage if you run through rain?

Only if its acid rain lol.....This is the stuff they coat piston crowns on drag engines so its tuff. Mine polishes up with Autosol or similar chrome polish...

What did you have to do to cure the paint?

This reminds me of Gun Koat that used to be popular for bike exhaust system but it had to be baked on at 350 degrees and was a bit tough to do on large headers.

My 2 cents.

Just some advice. I used high temp ceramic header paint too but the first time I let it dry about 6 months while I reassembled the bike. Once I started riding the paint flaked off at the top of all 4 headers within a week. Per some advice on here, I repainted them then after they weren't tacky I mounted them to the bike and fired it up. Let it run for a 5 min then shut it off for 30min. Fired it up again and rode around the block. After the ride they looked all bubbled and crappy but when they cooled it was smooth and baked on. Has been that way for couple thousand miles now. I am definitely a believer of tempering the finish. I just used the Duplicolor header paint from O'reillys.

I've been using Duplicolor black satin paint from the local Sherwin-Williams professional outlet here on my electrical products and it's the best rattle can paint I've found.

With that in mind, I'm going to try a can of their header paint the next time I'm over that way. I'll be sure and wait to paint the pipes until just before I'm ready to install them and take the old girl for a ride.

I too am going for the blacked out look but in a different style bike.

Ran at idle for 10min. Let cool for 30min. Ran at idle for 15 min. Let cool for 20 min. Then drove the bike for 30 min. Also run the bike out side, there is alot of fumes that come of the pipes while the paint cures. It does bubble but smooths out when it cools.

Also the outside temp was about 60 F when I did this.
