exhaust coatings

What do you all think about exhaust coatings? My headers are really rusted up on the surface, due to PO, and want to clean them up. I'm looking for recommendations and cost ideas. Mostly the cost aspect of it.

Should I rechrome them? I dont mind a little blueing.

I was thinking Jet coatings. I was quoted $225.00 for the headers only a bit pricy.

Prep 'em up real good and paint them with Dupli Color 1200 degree ceramic spray paint. About $7 a can.

On the KZ site I heard several bad accounts of folks have bad luck with JetHot jobs. I also heard good ones, but just a warning.

Had my headers done with ceramic HRC.....cost around $150?( was less than chrome) 5 yrs ago & still look like new

What about that exhaust fabric tape?

I did a mod for a buddy of mine who rode a 2006 Yamaha R1.

He put on a Termignoni Carbon fiber setup, but the collector goes right under the seat, and he said that his "area" got so hot that he couldn't ride for very long!

We wrapped the collector pipes with that fabric exhaust tape, and it made a tremendous difference! The seat did not get that hot, and it seemed to run a litle better. Like it needs to, right? I think 189mph is a little too fast on two wheels!

It looked OK after a few weeks.

Any thoughts?

I've been thinking about this to. Many moons ago someone posted a link to an outfit that does ceramic coating. Guru DiverRay sez the process actually helps cool the engine by directing the heat away from the engine and out the pipes: especially if the first 6" or so of the inside of the pipes are coated. Exaust pipes that are givin the aluminium color coating have a very cool brushed aluminium look. It is also available in black and red, I think, and probably other colors.
I'm curious about the tape. Does it just protect butts and legs from heat, or does it also help cool the engine, or perhaps do just the opposite? I've painted my pipes several times, but the paint keeps burning off. Maybe I just haven't been using the right Duplicolor.

If you have the time, do it yourself. I used Techline coatings and I purchsed the stuff online. You need to sandblast the exhaust with 100 or 120 grit aluminum oxide and get rid of all traces of rust. Sand is OK too but glass beads are not very good. AO or Sand will leave the surface with a tooth for the coating wheras glass beads will actually close the surface. Then spray the item with the coating and let it air dry. some can be cured with exhaust heat but I baked mine at 500 deg. for an hour. Its been a year now and looks like the fday I put it on.

Just a thought and another option.

Also was interested in VHT header paint. Suppose to be really good? Has anyone tried it?

I've NEVER had luck with the paint. The rain, rocks, and bugs as you ride is hard on it. I find after about one year it looks like junk. I'm going to look into the ceramic coatings for one bike, and probably just paint the one I will be selling in a while.

heres a pic of my headers. HRC coated...4 yrs ago-still as new.Ive used VHT, black is good but the colours are too hard to keep clean

WOW Chrisso very nice ride. Love the paint. Looking at the pipes after 4 years, they are still looking nice. Easy to keep clean?

I will have to find out how must they charge now for the coating now.

I used the Bright Aluminum color. A small can was about $20.00 and enough to do two 4-1 headers. I dont have any current pictures but the finish looks like Chrisso's headpipes.

They make a Cermakrome color that is like Chrome after it is polished but the reason I did not go for this one is that it is only available in a quart for about $70.00. A quart is snough to do about 10 exhaust systems. Plus, the finish must be polished after it is cured in a vibrating polisher with MicroBrite ceramic polishing agent. Of course, not many of us have one of these units so I opted for the Aluminum coating instead.

About that wrapping, didnt they coat that with some kinda stuff? Thought I read that in a summit racing catalog or something once.. wrap that cloth or whatever that is on there and paint em with some gook. Could be wrong I always just wondered about that.
