I tried to test the double-tap on the signals while I was out riding today and it doesn't seem to bypass the auto-cancel. If anything, it just reset the timer.

I think that's all it does. I think I'd rather it NOT bypass it, because I have become accustomed to hitting the switch a second time if I feel it might cancel on me. I'd hate for that to then cause it to continue as I drive off down the road.

That's why I (hopefully not just me!) was checking it out. I heard wrong and that's fine with me. It might have worked that way on everyone else's bike but mine was broken.

            Nope

Actually, sometimes, but only the left one, and only sometimes. Pressing in works for the left signal to cancel, and for the right, I need to press slighty left on the switch, and then press in. It passes MA inspection that way, so it works for me.

The little contacts and/or the centering spring in the handlebar switch might be bent or dirty if it does that. It's almost a toss up between just letting it be or taking apart the switch and possibly breaking the old solder joints then having to go through the entire assembly to get it to work again.

FWIW the one on my XS is about due for the full treatment again but I don't have to worry about passing inspection.

Honestly, since it passes inspection and gets me where I need to go safely, the flasher is somewhere at the bottom of my priority list, right below getting rid of those little bullet hole stickers that the PO put on the tank. By the time I get around to fixing it, I'll be so used to the little quirks it has that never be able to use one that works "right"

On my 81 SH the blinker would not even stay on when I first got it back on the road but after spraying the switch with some contact cleaner it works fine. Haven't checked it on the 79 SF yet.

Yep, it works great. What I want to know is why Yamaha could provide it on my 79 XS, but my 08 FJR doesn't have it.

My auto-cancel worked great until after I swapped out the speedo to the 1979 160mph one. Anyone know if I can make it work with the 160 speedo?

I bet the reed switch in the speedo is no good. You can replace it. I had to do the same with mine. Check out this thread http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33221 scroll to the bottom and you will see the part # I used.

                          auto cancel

Yep, mine works now. It didn't when I first got the bike a couple of years ago. But then I started going thru the ele. system looking for problem areas, I found that a couple of wires to the unit had some ele. tape on them. I removed the tape and found burnt corroded splices, no solder, just twisted together, and to add insult to that, those two wires were transposed in the plug......I figured the unit was a gonner, but after I got it straightened around and fixed properly, Yahoo !!!!......been working fine every since

Mine does not work, but it looks like the controls are getting gummed up to the point the switch sticks in the right position, and I have to pop it back to center now anyway. Just add it to the growing list...

Mine works fine, however, as has been said before in this thread, I push-cancel it 99% of the time out of good riding habits so the signal doesn't continue to flash and mislead a cage driver.

Self-cancelling turn signals, IMO, are not a regular use feature, per se, but to cover ourselves when we do forget to turn off the signal.

                                Self Cancel

Both of my bikes work. They are stock. Had a problem when I first got the SF. Signals would come on and not blink. Took the OE flasher apart, filed the contact points, put it back together and they went right to work. That was a year ago.
