I’m getting 36 MPG with Houston's 10% alcohol fuel; 41 MPG with real gas at 65 MPH. However, I'm running my '82 XJ1100 with a fully electronic fuel injection (EFI) system. The ignition is a GM DIS unit off a Chevy Cavalier. Note: The spark system will hurt you. I know because it bit me one day when I pulled a spark plug lead with the engine running.

My best mileage is 47 MPG at 55 MPH, 98 octane; but I was probably running a little lean.

I installed a wide band O2 sensor last fall, but haven’t had a chance to retune the EFI controller, so I might get a little better mileage with a day of tweaking. At the current gas prices, I should make this a priority. It’s still better than driving the car at 22 MPG. My MC is configured with a full Slipstreamer windshield and an XS750 rear end differential mod, with after market pipes. Stan

Re: heres some other happy customers

And this'll work on the XJ's? Is it needed on them as well?

          xj's

if the xj does NOT have a balast resistor, and the coils are 3 ohm, then yes, the Vf1000 coils will work....So will the ZRX coils or the Dyna GREEN coils (3 ohm vs 1.5ohm red Dyna's) A lot of the late 90's Kawasaki coils are 3-ohm and have replaceable wire connections as well....chop

The XJ does NOT have a ballast resistor. I ran with the green Dyna coils for years; which are 3 ohm.

                  your answer

I thought so. This 81 motor and wiring harness I have don't have the resistor either, I will slap these coils on it...They read 2.88 ohms...you could put them on the earlier motors without the resistors...someone was talking about this in an earlier thread

2nd tank, 27.9 MPG approx. Getting a bit better, mostly highway on this one. It has 4 into 1 Kerker but stock air box and not sure if tuned correctly. Supposedly the PO re-jetted when they put the exhaust on.

Plugs look good. Running Seafoam thru it to try and clear the low end bog. Seems to be getting a bit cleaner...

More riding tomorrow and Sat. Maybe get a betting rating.

I finally got around to finding out my Mileage on my 80 special. It is all stock except for the 4 into 1 exhaust. Last two tanks I averaged between 36 and 38 MPG. I usually run around at about 4000 RPM as well and love quick accelerations so I could possibly get better.

At last check, the Ratster was filled from half and measured by the trip scale. Average mpg in town is around 51. By in town, I mean the open road 45mph stretches around here. Not inside Atlanta. Havent looked at hwy here but on the way down it wasnt too great. Apparently, lightening the load had something to do with that?

                          Riding

Well mileage depends on who I'm riding with and where when commuting to and from work about 16 each way 10 of which highway get around 30 but if out riding with ball and chain she keeps my speed down and mpg up around 34-35. guess who is the responsible one is??

It;s Getting better and I think the carbs are getting cleaned out.

                            Friday - 101 Miles @ 3.3 gallons = 30.6 (Rinding Double)

                            Sat. - 88 Miles @ 2.7 gallons = 32.5 MPG (Single, mostly highway)

39.955 over the long weekend. That was the average over two tanks I went through cruising around with SWMBO. Bike is mostly stock but I think its running a bit lean due to 4 to 2 exhaust. 1up mostly 2 lane roads 50 - 65ish. I have to go slow when shes around cuz her honda shadow just can't keep up if I hammer on it.
