  • 2008 Yosemite Rally

I'm playing with the dates for another try at a Yosemite/Gold Country Rally. Right now, June 13-14-15 is looking good. That should be after most graduation events, and a little warmer than our April 2007 event. It seemed to rain only one weekend last year, and we hit it.

Tkat, Ron, Ray, Pat, how does it look for you guys? If we have a few people interested, I'll get the ball rolling. SWMBO (Kelly) will be chaperoning again, so we'll all be safe...

That looks good for me. That's the weekend after my finals for that quarter. I haven't been to Yosemite since they did all the work in the valley. I'm interested to see how it is now.
    Looking for an XS

sounded great - 'til I checked Google Earth. At 1,370 miles+ it's a little too far, unless I win the lottery and don't have to work anymore

        LoHo,
That only gives me a three day window to get out to Texas! I've already planned on trying to make the get together with planedick, so I'll have to see. I don't know if SWMBO will put up with me gone for almost two weeks, and not even a work trip!
        Sip,
Look at the trip as an iron butt to Reno, and a nice second day ride!

LoHo,,,,,sounds good for me and the xj,,,hope I don't get stuck doing 1st session h.s. summer school as I applied for second session to teach. Sounds like a much better weather option as June in Calif. is usually nice all around the state. Keep the forum informed....Regards, Mike in San Diego,,,xj1100

Mike, I'll be teaching summer school, too, but won't have as far to travel. I'm toying with a variety of possibilities, and we'd love to have you, even for a day. That's a lot of riding for a weekend. We'll see if we can come up with a do-able plan.

                my hat's in the ring
June would be MUCH better than last April - it was C-O-L-D.
Let me know how I could help.

I might be able to get to this one...only about 860 miles from home. Alredy put it on my calendar, will request the time off next week when my boss gets back from vacation.

Is there a 'base camp' location? I'll be looking for a camping spot, would like to know what area to look in.

Basecamp will probably be Yosemite KOA, unless I can work on SWMBO to permit campers at our humble abode. We live smack in the middle of Fresno, but have some room. The KOA is okay, has decent facilities, and is near Yosemite. It has camping and kabins, and is more in keeping with the rally idea. I was thinking of heading for the coast on Sunday with guys who want to peel off for home doing so. Any thoughts on these scenarios?

                      rally

Quick thought,,,KOA's are great, we can raise hell, drink like a fish, harass the owners and other campers, party like no tomorrow.....just kidding, KOA's are great, cheap, clean, hot water, pool, jacuzzi?, overall nice camping and casual, and close to all the sights,,,,,,,,no LoHo house to destroy, and the weather should be great in June , regards, Mike in Sun Diego

Widespread chain of campgrounds . You've probably seen their signs all over the place.

                            Ken,
The KOA was a little bit steep last year. I noticed an older motel with room prices about the same as the KOA. This was last years Elbonia Ride, and off peak. I KNOW it will be peak season in June, and ALL the roads and campgrounds WILL be crowded! If you do want to camp, try to hook up with one of the other riders and share the spot. We had three spaces last year, and it worked out well.

I just made my ressie for 6/13-15. I told them that others would be signing up soon.

Yeah, Ray, I know it won't be as empty as last year...in the COLD and RAIN...but we'll give this a try. Earlier gives us the same problems, and later just increases the congestion. Here's a link:

                              http://www.koa.com/where/ca/05195/

I suggest that three of you get together and split a cabin, which works out to about $32 a night per. That might also reduce the crap you have to carry, as a sleeping bag would cover it. Of course, there was one weekend of rain in '07, and it fell on our rally.
