  • Miles per year

My riding season ended today with the first large snowfall and subsequent salting of the roads. I felt like I biked more this year with all the hot weather, with hosting XS East and helping to get this forum off the ground. Also I am a member of several bike clubs. Almost every waking moment is either spend riding or wishing I was. My mileage totals really surprised me, much lower than I thought.

Last year I did about 18K miles on my 3 bikes, this years miserable total was only 10K.

    Bandit - 3K
    Triumph - 5K
    XS11 - 2K

So how many miles did you ride this year? Or estimate an average year

      season ended?

Hey folks....what do you mean season end, most of you are alot farther south of me(Northern Ontario,Canada)and we just woke up to two inches of snow but they're calling for a warm front so it will melt and they don't put down salt until we get a foot or two.I'll have a reprieve and as long as it's above freezing I'll still be riding(that god for that greenhouse effect)....as for the milage this year, when we were younger we all lived on our rides, but now don't seems not enough hours in the day or other chores get preferance...Will

Had to go check notes...looks like about 10K on Sojurn (XJ) this year. Ran quite a bit with no speedo, which died on the outgoing South Dakota trip, so spent several weeks of prime-time riding just estimating mileages.

          Trip list:

          Camp South Dakota in Spearfish
Grand Canyon North Rim - twice - Plus Pipe Spring Natl. Monument
          Bryce Canyon
          SW Colorado- fall colors run
          Zion National Park
Lake Havasu City- home of London Bridge
          Kingman, AZ (Route 66 fame)
Flagstaff, Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon - several times

Didn't get in the long distance rides I wanted, particularly to the Big Island Duce shindig. Most of my mileage this year was within the state of AZ or southern Utah. Most of the year I was working 2 jobs, cut into my weekend time. Now down to one better-paying job, nice to have some weekends off! Used the trailer about 5 times for camping, 4 over-nights and the 1 extended trip to Spearfish.

          Bike mods this year:

          Mini-floorboards replaced stock footpegs
Lowers for the Vetter Windjammer IV fairing installed this fall
          Sealed battery
Installed Chris Rawson set of SS brake lines

People I really need to thank:

          Dale Hicks
          Bob Garcia
          Bill Bowman

Was a pretty good year over-all!

I've ridden between 4-5k so far this year (my riding season is still going). Glad to see you managed to squeeze out 2k on your XS11.

What season end? A little wet recently, but I'll go when its down to 30. degrees, for a short time anyway. I will put her down during a few weeks in Jan for a little tear down stuff, but I can always get warm. A guy I used to work with went in ice storms. He has an olde Triumph trials bike, puts his feet down like skids and rolls on. They do sell snowmobile suits down here, too.

They say it's gonna snow here tomorrow... I hate that white ka-ka.

Anywayz, I calculated that if I had a bike that worked, I'd do bout 20-30k per year.

It sux being cashless all the time.

They do sell snowmobile suits down here, too.
For fall riding when I lived in Wisconsin I bought a heavy 'Refrigerator-wear' suit. I have an older Yamaha sled for winter use, a V-Max 540L, and the suit is a good choice for both snowmobile and motorcycle wear. Price was about $120.00.

Other cold-weather riding problem was frost build-up on the inside of the helmet face shield. An HJC helmet with heated visor took care of that. Purchased from Zanotti Motors at a good price, seems to me less than $150.00 including the heated visor. Been a few years, though.

Have found the lowers I put on the Vetter this fall not only keeps cold air off the knees, but channels warm air to the ankles. Helps keep feet comfortable on those colder morning commutes.

Fleece-lined leather gloves take care of keeping the hands warm.

Personally I like riding in the cooler weather. Riding to work with temps in mid to high 20s is OK with me, as long as the roads are clear, and the ride home under these autumn-blue skies is terrific.

I live out of town and about 9 miles from work and occasionally drive home for lunch, making 2 round trips a day. The ride is sometimes better than the job.....

                          Gary....Gary.....Gary

I had to check my notes as well. I put on 12,000 kilometers.
Except for trailering my XS11 to the beautiful New York state I was never farther than 200 kilometrs from home.

                          Work for the Winter

                          New Seat
                          Grease the shaft
                          New Paint
Maybe a different exhaust or at least rechroming it.
                          A new set of tires
                          Brake pads
                          Tom

                            Miles per year

Sold the car, truck gets 8mpg, XS does 30+, full fairing, lowers, good jacket, mild winter. Even I could figure the math on that one!
                            When a 10 isn't enough, get a 11. 80g Hardbagger

Fairing? Lowers? Visor? Heated face piece?
Snomobile suit and old army gloves is as good as it gets.
What's a little chill? During winter I go on a 10 mile loop a couple of times a week. It easier to keep things going, than set it up for storage.

                              For me anyway...
