This clean green thing, it's the extremists at either end you gotta watch out for, kneejerk public reaction blah blah, good on them for pushing the 'save the planet' thing, even if it is under intimidation, threats, blackmail, extortion, violence, bloodshed etc.. at least it's something

Sigh Max, looks like might need to throw out your "NUKE THE WHALES" T-shirts..

Thank you. You've made my point precisely Patrick.

So when did threats, blackmail, and distortion take the place of scientific reasoning. Threats, violence, and bloodshed seems to be the standard modus operendi of the extremist enviroMENTALists. They can't prove their case with facts so they resort to bombing power plants and burning SUVs.

Once again shoring up another point I've made ad nauseum... people like you cast logic and reason to the wind in lieu of casting virgins into volcanoes...or worse.

You clowns are really showing your true colors. I mean really...Extortion, blackmail and violence is now justified? Need I say more?

If this is what it takes to prove your so called "science' then you must have a REEEEEAL STRONG CASE...

          Pat Kelly

There's nothing wrong with using "what if scenarios". Venus may have supported life before. But it can not be proven and therefore is nto scientific. Some day we may actually be able to make observations about Venus that might support your notions. As it stands now...no...sorry. Nice thought but there is little evidence to substantiate it...but nice thought.

As far as the geologic fact that the earth has demonstrated numerous...reiterative ... warming and cooling cycles over hundreds of millions of years...this is not only true but irrefutable. It can and has been proven beyond reasonable doubt.

So how is it the people that purport anthropogenic global warming ignore these inconvenient truths? Easy...it doesn't support their agenda so they just ignore it.

Real scientists take in ALL the facts and draw conclusions from the big picture. In light of that I freely admit man may have some impact on global warming. But to what extent?!?! This is what CAN NOT be proven. Thus my analogy of the man watching the house fire across the street smoking a cigar. The kooks think HE's the main source of heat. Tylenol please... If it could be proven the body of evidence would be overwhelming. INstead we have a bunch of hacks that are simply screaming at the top of their collective lungs 24/7 making the unsuspecting public THINK the body of evidence is overwhelming when indeed that supposed body is dubious at best.

Nice discussion class. But I must get to bed. I have bathroom to remodel this weekend. Class resumes on Monday.

Jeeze Maximan, take a chill pill! Yea, the duplicity of the "global warming" and "greenhouse gas" thing p$#s me off, especially when I hear of school teachers scaring the bejessus out of grade school kids who should be thinking about other things. I hate seeing children being manipulated to get to their parents.

The "scientific method" has advanced mankind technologically, but science has its limitations. It can only deal with what is physically quantifiable, and there is more to reality than what can be physically quantifiable! Reality, I have come to believe, is greater than the sum of its parts.

You seem to be stuck in the realm of Aristotelian physics. Do you realize that in the court room, circumstantial evidence is actually preferable to eye witness evidence? This is because eye witness evedence is so easily disproved! Have you ever been to a really good "magic show," or seen a professional illusionist? Seeing is believing, right! Yea, right. The lady was really sawn in half: I saw it! And the Piltdown Man...

Aw man, I'm just gonna have to start my own thread. I don't wanna hijack yer thread. Clan McGregor is taking over. F#% Scots!

Old bikers never die, they're just out of sight!

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"
            I've been riding since 1959.

lib, he's too wound up to chill, hell, even I know greenhouse global warming is the meanest, most cynical brainwashing exercise yet devised, but hey, everything nowadays seems based on greed and deceit - so what's new? I long ago gave up worrying about it..

Gawd I love this!!!! So many targets...so little time!
I'd almost be scared... if I didn't think you'd be shooting blanks...

Gosh Cody, it seems you think the rest of the world is absolutely stupid if they don't agree with you on this one...
Playing devil's advocate here... I am not going to shut out the idea of alien occupation of the earth... Sure... there may not be scientific proof... but then again.. maybe there is... Heaven knows our government has covered up enough secrets that could provide a lot of answers to a lot of questions... maybe that's one of them...
As a scientist... can you completely ignore the idea of scientific theorem here? Actually, as a scientist... can one afford to shut out any possibility without total and irrefutable proof one way or another?
It can only deal with what is physically quantifiable, and there is more to reality than what can be physically quantifiable!
                Precisely!

As for the environmental extremists... I actually agree with you here. I don't believe that terror tactics in any form lead to a positive outcome. What happens when the rich lady gets red paint thrown on her new fur coat? She goes and buys another one... kind of defeats the purpose of the attack...
I understand the frustration of these people... I just don't agree with their methods.
I also believe that the extremists on the other side are just as guilty of morally repugnant actions... but this all becomes a matter of personal opinion... much like your idea of environMENTALs...
...it doesn't support their agenda so they just ignore it.
That works just as easily on both sides of the argument... people can justify anything they believe one way or another...

                  I love progressives so much.
I work in facility that primarily builds parts for gas guzzling SUV's.
Last month the local Democrats in charge of this area banned all smoking in the workplace. I think its wonderful. Now, when I look across the factory through the haze of weld smoke I can be thankful that my lungs aren't being damaged by the evils of second hand tobacco smoke. ITs so insidious that you can't even tell the difference.
Now the richest 1% of our line workers that can afford cigarettes can spend 10 minutes of their 15 minute break walking to the smoking area outside.

                    Common sense is rarely common

and it isn't just the Democrats (just an FYI... I'm non-partisan... I think both sides are a little more than moderately ignorant)
The whole smoking ban... especially in bars (personal opinion here) and places where it obviously isn't going to do any good (as in your place of employment, Scott)... is a bit off kilter...
Kind of like John's place of employment telling the employees they can't have pictures of girls hanging on their toolboxes... even if they are wearing swimsuits that cover more of their body than the models in the lingerie ads that come in the newspaper every Sunday... Why? Because it might offend the lady who comes in to clean the bathrooms... actually, I think it was because a female management type came through the shop ONE time and saw a picture she was offended by... whatever the case... it wasn't a regular duty station for her... Why should she have a say so? Whatever happened to workers' rights? Shouldn't majority rule here?
It has nothing to do with party politics, progressives or anything else... just the people with the most money and/or the biggest mouths...

Oops.. got a little off track here...

I have a chip in my head

Talking about Aliens amongst us - - -
Traffic lights are only red 50% of the time, right? So why does every traffic light I come up to turn red just before I get there? Applying the Scientific Method, Occam's Razor etc. to this phenomenon the best and simplest explanation is that I have been kidnapped by Aliens, subjected to strange experiments, mindwiped and then sent back home after being fitted with a chip in my head that sends information back to the mothership. The chip is stealthed of course; not even X-rays can find it. The only evidence is that the chip triggers traffic lights. If it triggered them green, fine! But red? Stupid effin' Aliens.
The entire Church of Elvis is founded on less evidence than this.

Ummmm... I definitely have a problem with the Speedos...

Fred... that alien abduction theory might explain a lot...

Funny... I've noticed the same thing... It almost seems the lights are trying to change just before I get there... One in particular... I can be the third vehicle in line at the red light... and it changes just long enough to let the car in front of me go... then it quickly changes before I can get through it... I'm not paranoid... I KNOW it's out to get me! I never thought about the alien implant possiblity... I figured it was a government conspiracy with the oil companies to burn more gas so I would buy more gas... especially since there is a gas station right next to it... you know how those oil companies are...

This is probably my last post to this thread before starting my own thread on a closely related subject: only because Maximan made it so.
The following is a "letter to the editor." I'll send it and see if it gets printed. In the mean time I post it for your amusemrent.

                                Editor San Jose Mercury News:
It was heartening to read the letter a couple of weeks ago from the school teacher who, rather than telling his students what to think about "global warming," was instructing them to think critically about the subject, and was even giving them some contrary facts to consider. It really angers me to read about the school system being used to indoctrinate our children with the "Gospel of Global Warming."

It amuses me to hear the "True Believers" of athropogenic global warming embracing "critical thinking." The true critical thinkers are the skeptics. Consensus isn't a scientific process, it's a political process. If human caused global warming were a proven fact, there would be no need for scientific consensus! There are very scientific and logical arguments against this neo-pagan "Gospel:" one has only to Google "global warming skeptics." In particular WWW.junkscience.com has a very interesting entry concerning the fallacy of "green house gasses." Check it out.
