Heck, the EPA says - on their web site - that human activity probably has an impact on this warming cycle.

The EPA has quite a few pages dealing with the science of global warming, including past cyles. http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/sci...stcc.html#last
Worth a read reagrdless of which side of the argument you are on.
Maximan...the only way a governement can get things done is to scare people. Look at all the biggest governement activities: building the Interstate system was for national defense, the 'space race' was to keep up with Russian technology, Iraq war was sold in part on Rice's "mushroom cloud" comment. Easier to motivate through fear than logic. While I don't agree with this approach, history has proven that fear can be effective in getting things done, so I am not surprised at it being employed in this cause. Should it be otherwise? Yes. But there it is.
As through much of its history, the Earth's climate is changing. Right now it is getting warmer, likely1 mostly as a result of human activities (IPCC, 2001; NRC, 2001). However, it cannot be ruled out that some significant part of the warming is due to natural variability (NRC, 2001). The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) State of the Climate Report and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Surface Temperature Analysis indicate the average temperature of the Earth’s surface has increased by about 1.2 to 1.4ºF since 1900. Other aspects of the climate are also changing, such as precipitation patterns, snow and ice cover, and sea level.

This page contains information about the causes of climate change throughout the Earth's history, the rates at which the climate has changed, as well as information about climate change during the last 2,000 years.
