            Daymn thats cool!!
In the first pics, it looks like it has sawed off mufflers from a new Thruxton.
That thing is so cool, all that's missing is an ammo box and a rifle holster.

            • [sigh]

My bikes were clean and shiny once.

              Before I bought them, probably.

I've been in more than one Hemisphere, and I wrote a book to help you do it too (or just prepare better for that week long road trip). Going Small, not just for the little guys.

              • here is my XS-

Hi everyone, I couldn't resist getting in on the action. I guess this is my official "coming out" post as I have spent most of my time here lurking around and learning from the XS masters. This is my second XS11, I had a sweet red 79 Special that I bought w/2000 mi on it in 1981, sold her in 85 and have regretted it ever since.

I got this 81sh two yrs. ago in rough shape for $300 w/approx. 42k miles and this is what I did to get her back on the road. Most of the stuff I got from ebay -

installed Midnight Special front end, the original tubes were badly pitted
140 mph speedo from an xs 750
                New tires, dunlop elite 3's
replaced fuel Tank, Seat and N.O.S side covers from ebay
                changed all fluids
                new carb boots
triple clean carbs, (thanks Ken for the float pin puller tool !)installed new needle valves and seats, adjusted float height, install inline filters, bought a merc gauge and synced the carbs, chucked the octy and installed new fuel lines w/inline filters
                rebuilt petcocks
rebuilt/cleaned all brakes, new pads and replaced the warped front discs and worn rear disc.
New fuse box (thanks to T.C.!)
                Uncle Spot reg/rec.
Replaced final drive with MNS part (seal was leaking gear oil on back tire)
                NOS engine guards
replaced cam chain tensioner (stripped bolt)
                replaced footrests
                Progressive rear shocks ($10 ebay!)
                rebuilt/resolderd L. side controls
                replaced rear brake light switch
                new clutch cable
                new wheel bearings
Yamaha "sport" fairing ($20 ebay, but it took me 6 months to find the mounting brackets)
                tkat fork brace
                cleaned all electrical connections
replaced locksets and fuel cap gasket
                MNS rear turn signals
and more that I have forgotten right now....

I have been gathering the parts and am just about ready to adjust the valves, replace the half moon cam seals and v. cover gasket, replace the clutch, install a nicer looking stock exhaust I have, replace drive shaft boot, install progressive fork springs, new oury grips, and repack the swing arm and steering head bearings. I also have a set of gold MNS wheels that I might put on next time I need tires, but I'm not sure about that.
Plus I have two spare motors, a 78e motor w/ approx. 17 k on it (probably sell this one) and a MNS motor w/approx. 20 k on it that I think I will give the big bore treatment over the next year or so before I put it in. I really like the idea of a black motor on this bike.

Almost all of this stuff was paid for by parting out other wrecked or junk bikes on ebay and using the funds to purchase XS11 parts. In the pics you can see a KZ 650 and an XS 400 that are next to go on ebay. If anyone needs parts from those bikes let me know.

I think I'm gonna call her "Almost Midnight", but I still have a lot of work to do. She's not quite ready for close up pics yet and now that it's running well I'm beginning to think about cosmetics.

Thanks to everyone on this forum for the help, groups like this are really what makes the internet worth something.

                    • My homage to Pain. The Dummerston Covered Bridge in Dummerson, Vt, the longest in-use covered bridge in Vermont.

Just past this bridge was East-West Road which connects VT Rt-30 with US 5. A very sweet twisty road covered with trees.

And a couple days later I took this:

This is at the top of the Mount Washington Auto Road. Half of it was paved, half was not. But since it was a HOG sponsored day it was slow going both up and down. Slowing down to 10 MPH behind a farting Harley on a dirt road with a 1000 ft drop to my right got pretty frustrating after awhile, especially when I knew my bike could do much better. Yes, I did get the sticker. I did see one other XS11 Special as I was getting ready for the descent but didn't get a chance to take a picture. The only other eleven I've seen all bike week.

I believe they are Tour Master bags. The PO gave them to me with the bike. They're very weathered, sunbleached, and saggy, but they get the job done when I need to stow my rain gear or snacks. They drape over the passenger seat and clip to the frame in the front. There's also a strap that goes under the brake light.

The trip up was fun. I took the quick route on 28 to 16. Route 16 is a nice ride with a lot of long sweepers. It was 130 miles from Manchester (where I last filled up) to the start of the road. I was kicking myself for not getting gas in North Conway. It was another 8 miles to Gorham where I could pray was a gas station. Well she made it, 138 miles and 42 mpg on the Special gas tank. Amazing machine! (Oops, this is turning into a ride report!)

When I get the guts, I'll try out the Kancamangus Highway.

This is the end result of my lowering attempt. I still need to get the frame welded on the other side, but it's stable enough for now. I like the way it looks and i love the way it rides now. I just wish i had got some softer shocks. These things are about a squish away from hardtail status.
