Its a Fazer1000 shock, I'm told its the same as the early R1 shock.

Definitely not the same Tom, R1 shock has the reservoir mounted vertically

                    • The fairing is an X1, a Yamaha factory option for the XJ. I believe Vetter actually made them for Yamaha. There was also a pair of hard saddlebags available at the time.

My fairing was found on Ebay at a junkyard in Arizona. It was missing the mounting hardware and windshield, which I had to fabricate. The chin fairing/spoiler (everything below the driving lights in the top photo) was not part of the factory option. I made it by carving out a block of styrofoam and covering it with fiberglass.

The mirrors also are not stock. It used to just have the normal handlebar mounted mirrors. About a month ago I got to looking at it and thought I could do better. I found those fairing mounted mirrors, which happen to be from an R1, so now the bike goes faster. :-)

                        • I kept the paint can, just in case I ever need to do a repair. The label says:

PPG Delstar acrylic enamel, Midnight Currant Red Pol, Tinting Guide DAR 4173 SC

And no, it's not Yamaha's Ruby Red or Macho Maroon. It's just a color I picked out of the catalog. It's very close to the stock Yamaha maroon color, except in a metallic.

                          • Don Vesco Fairing

Here are some pictures of my 1980 XS1100G with a Don Vesco Fairing. The fairing has been painted to match the tank. Don Vesco at one time held the land speed record for a motorcycle. The mirrors are Vitaloni's Baby Turbo. This fairing is very light, well made, and provides excellent protection. I have never had any problems except to replace the rubber mounting washers which had become hard, so the vibration would be reduced.

                            • Hey gberg,

I gotta tell ya, I am not usually a fan of the full faring look, but that set up looks great. I love the lower scoop!

If you have read any of my posts in the past, you know I am a man who likes to "fabricate" stuff for my XJ!

Did you make your backrest / luggage rack as well?

                              LOOKS GREAT

                              • Thanks for the kind words.

Yeah, I made the backrest. I even did a tech-tip of sorts for it a while back. It's under the Modifications/Other forum here on XS11.com. Or here's a direct link: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...=&threadid=100

After doing a search of the site I see a few other folks have had the same idea. That aluminum rail and big rubber handle surrounding the XJ's seat makes it really easy. And swmbo sure likes it!
