    3Phase,
I don't know about 97 but I have been into Roseburg, Oregon on I-5 and it is a breeze. Beautiful too. 97 looks more rural and I don't think it is as big of a road.

Yep, and the maps say I-97 is ~50 miles shorter but only 10 minutes faster than going I-5. I'm not sure I trust the time/distance calculator so I was hoping that someone that actually lived in Oregon would know. Tony's suggestion to run up to Salem and head east to the lake would be the best and safest as most of it's ground I've been over before.

I've been up and down the 5/99 from Mexico and up into Canada but I haven't been to inland Oregon on what appears to be the eastern side of the Klamath/Cascade mountain ranges. At least fuel doesn't seem to be a problem!

97 is a two lane road, but it is wide enough, and a great drive. You may find it a bit rougher, but all in all it is a good road. For the ease of riding i think I5 would be best.

I would take I-5, I don't trust googles mileage estimates.

            Flip a coin

at Weed, Ca. and decide which way to go from there.

I-97 looks like one of those shorter routes by mileage that can burn up a huge amount of time but are more fun to ride.

I-5 is safe and will probably wear a flat spot in the center of my new tires but it will get me to the lake before my reservation expires for the weekend.

            Hmm.... <tapping teef>

On the lighter side: I talked with my friends in Vancouver last night and they're staying at a site (C-8?) with an electrical hookup. They're bringing some gear with them so I can carry less weight on my bike.

                  Scott,

I have traveled from Bakersfield to Bend several times.
Hwy 97 isn't bad at all. Much more senic than the super
slab. The only drawback is it has slower speed limits in
a lot of places. The speed doesn't bother me as I'm
                  pulling a 31' TT.

Have a safe trip which ever route you take.

Scott if you've never been up hwy 97 I would highly recommend the ride. It's beautiful here and we usually have great weather this time of year.I would recommend heading west on hwy 20 at north end of Bend to Sisters then on to Detroit lake from there.(Santiam pass)Remember sisters is last gas for 50 miles.Ride safe I'll see you on Friday.

The trailer is loaded, hooking up pickup in about ten
                        minutes. Headed for Oregon.

I'm packed and ready to head out. I-97 sounds like a good ride but I have to wait for yet-another new rear tire.

The rear tire picked up a nail so I had to order another one after only 1,000 miles on it. It should be here today or tomorrow. The bike looks funny all loaded up and ready to go with no rear wheel.
