Downtown DC is like a war zone. I was down there just before Irene to drop my Daughter off at Catholic U. and my hotel was in downtown DC. Police sirens like 24 hrs a day there. I was there fior three days and each day I saw at least one pull-over stop & search.

Caldwell or Marietta, both are in the middle, so either place would serve as a start point. I'm thinking Marietta is too citified, so I got my eye on Caldwell to start. At least one motel and gas station there right by the exit.
We are still open to ideas for other places, WV, VA, PA, anyplace; if someone wants to step up and take us someplace we have time to discuss.Marty in NW PA

Pretty good odds I could make an Ohio trip. Could stop and see relatives in Wisconsin on the way out or way back. Most likely would be on the Concours as the XJ is still waiting for me to work on it.
Earlier in the summer or later in the fall is better, less humidity and fewer bugs. Memorial Day or Labor Day?
If a spot is needed to park a rally web page, I can offer my site.Jerry Fields

Typically we ride 140 to 200 miles each day, depends upon the expected traffic, types of roads, how long we stop at whatever attractions or tourist traps or photo ops or whatever. By the time of the rally, the routes are all planned out, including gas stops for Specials and lunch and all that.
If we decide on SE OH, we are 'technically' outside our "XS East" area, a little further west than we have been in the past, but only a little bit. I wouldn't want to go any further west with our group. The roads in SE OH are very good, but any further west might be too much of a stretch for some of our usual suspects in the XS East group.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++
For the noobs, the next 2-3 months from now is the time to discuss alternative rally sites, then usually around November-December we decide where the rally is to be held. We have a host person or persons who get the motel reservation info. (But the earlier this happens the earlier we can reserve a block of rooms at the motel.)
Then usually by early spring, with input from any of the local XS folks in the area, the routes are planned with gas and food stops and all that. The rally is scheduled for Memorial day weekend, most folks who attend ride to the motel on Friday, we do the group ride Saturday and Sunday, and everyone goes home on Monday. It is about 50/50 riding and socializing - we ride with a few social stops during the day, and socialize with a few stops to take a drink in the evening in the parking lot. We try to find a motel that is fairly cheap, fairly clean, with a good parking lot for socializing. We are NOT so boisterous (well, not TOO much) that we get kicked out, as we might want to return some day.Marty in NW PA

Yep, if we have to ride thru Warren I try to go at night with the lights out, hoping no one sees me... Actually Sally teaches for the Warren Co School District, in Sheffield.
Now, topic content - Have you ridden any of those wonderful twisty 2 lane roads around the Athens - Bristol - Caldwell, east and north of Marietta neighborhood, and do you have any good touristy stops or recommend any beaneries in that area?Marty in NW PA
