  • 2011 XS North Rally

I'm probably gonna regret starting this thread, but here's my thoughts.

I have the rally banner. I also have a basic (unused) T shirt design left over from last year. I will need a date and location so I can send it to Ralph for printing.

The traditional long weekend for the rally spans Friday July 1st - Monday July 4th. The Rally dates would be Saturday July 2nd and Sunday July 3rd.

As for location I will start off by nominating my new home town North Bay.
It may be a little too far north for some, about a 1 hour ride further north than last years rally in Minden.
North Bay has lots of reasonable motels, hotels and restaurants.
The ride route I have in mind would be a day ride around Tamiscaming Shores. The morning ride would be through Quebec and the afternoon through Ontario. Very scenic, good roads, enough fuel stops for Specials. There is a write up and a few pics posted in Ride Reports thread in my Quebec/Ontario Border Run post.
For those arriving early or leaving late I have some cool shorter runs.

And no, everyone cannot stay at my place, I will be at the motel with everyone else.
And yes, there will be tools, some parts and tons bad advice available if you need them. I'll be riding the Diva (79 Special).

    Open to all ideas.
    Thx BDF

You sure can Tom. We keep them with the igloo's, ski hills, Tee-Pees and ice fishing huts down at the outside hockey rink. Don't forget to bring your Ski-Doo suit.
The short bus tour leaves every hour for a round trip from Toronto.
All short bus riders must wear a hockey helmet with a full face cage. Drool bibs are recommended.
      Thx BDF

I was reading the past threads on XS North and it seems that holiday weekend means alot of traffic and long delays at the border for those coming up from the US. So my question is, Does this have to be on a holiday weekend?

Well no it doesn't have too......BUT I think the idea is to save some hoildays on either side of the border.

I myself have min of 7weeks of time off.

One thing I loath more than anything else is being on the road on my bike with millions of other holiday travelers.

Returning back to the US at the border from this year's rally, we were 4 hours on line in the HOT sun - was not fun. Ran out of water the first hour, no shade, 100 degrees F, REALLY impertinent drivers continuously cutting in front and no recourse.

As much fun as we had with our friends and the ride, I am not looking to have another friggin' crossing like that, might be the stopper this year.

It is the time of the day and the day of the week that is the total overload of the system.
Weekends are the worst and then the end of the weekend Sunday afternoon into eveningor Monday afternoon into evening (being a long weekend)

My feeling is this needs to take place on a non holiday week/end when travelers are at a minimum not at its peak.

I'm not sure I'd change the dates. With both sides of the border having a holiday so close together, it is a good idea to have the rally around the 1st - 4th of July. Saves vacation time. But the same reasons that make it advantageous also make it bad, like when all the other thousands of holiday cagers are crossing the border returning home at the same time on the same one lane road at the end of the weekend.

Maybe the other crossings might be less crowded than the one we used.

In the end it is like any other rally - you try to accommodate the group, set the date and location, hope most of the group makes it, and those who can't go or won't go for whatever reason, don't.

The dates are good. When we crossed over any where on our trip to xsnorth and I crossed 4 times in my travels last year. There were delays at each place any where from 1 hr to 2hr. Where Marty crossed on a holiday weekend was going to be the worst one to cross atwe did early that week and it was bad then. The holiday weekend are used so some of us can make the trip longer or some won't be able to come to the get party.

                            Other Border Crossings

The Sarnia crossing would probably be shorter wait times than Buffalo or Detroit but that would come with longer travel times.
Sarnia to North Bay is approx. 375 miles. Buffalo to North Bay is 300 miles. I guess it would depend how close you live to a crossing point.
For the more adventurous, the Sault Ste. Marie crossing would make a great ride. Detroit to North Bay is about 620 miles. I think Brent and Ralph came that way this year.
There are two or three crossing points east of Lake Ontario but I have never crossed at them to know what the wait times would be. They are within 270 miles of North Bay.

Brent and I crossed at 4 differant spots in and out of Canada and the US last year Buffalo, Port Huron-Sarnia, Sault Ste. Marie, and Alex Bay know mater where you cross you will wiat up to 2-3 hrs . I just depends on the time of day you get there holiday weekend or not . As Marty can agree to the only way for a fast crossing is go to some noname place and cross and even then you can still have trouble am I right Marty Like that Island we went to for a half hour.
