    Help with 750 rear

    Maximan,
I likely will take you up on your offer to help with my mod.
I am just wondering if any year 78-80 xs750 rear hub will work.
I today accidentially posted this and a related question (re:750 rear rim) in a new thread, you'll see it there.
The bronze bushing you mention is the bushing which also can be made from copper pipe in the mod description?

    About the 'hype':
I am not worshipping the earth. (Albeit, it is my only home)
I do know though, that the very very thin layer of breathable air, covering the globe, is essential for me and my children and all the other species. It is fragile in the face of 6 billion humans who all want now a piece of the American dream, which translates into consume at all cost...SUV's and all
That is what I am a tad freaked out about.
And hey, it is OK to agree to disagree on any issue. I am not trying to convert anyone, but I certainly have to follow my own conscience.
BTW , I did read Micheal Creighton's "State of Fear " in which he attempts to call the bluff of the bleeding heart environmentalists. I hear he is now adviser to your fearless leader George Bush on climate issues.
So yes, I am afraid alright......but not enough not to drive a 1100cc motorbike appearently. If consistency is the only way to integrity, I suppose I am flawed like most of us...
For what it's worth, even Kermit the frog knew: It is not easy to be green

Yes the cooper version will work well.

Regarding the drive...any 750 drive will work. But so will any XS850 drive. I would prefer the 850 rive. It is a type two drive and does not employ the bearing shims. I merely uses a crush washer (expansion spacer).

      However either will work.

It's too easy for me to be green! I once took a 30' fishing vessel of the coast of Oregon for a few hours. When I got back I was "green". After two days of vomiting and laying in bed I was still "green".

      I don't like being green.

I'm happy with 30MPG from my '80G naked bike because if I had to change my riding style to pick up a few MPG I'd probably wonder why I liked riding so much. In the grand scheme of things, quality of life will always rule, and nobody ever brags about riding like their mother and going 10 miles further between fuel stops, at least not on this site. Your riding style, the age and level of tune of the bike all contribute to MPG. I'll work on my carbs to tweak an MPG or two before I'll put my right wrist in a splint.

Ya know Tod...it's strange. On boat I'm toast. But on a bike the motion doesn't bother me. Actually roller coasters don't get me too bad. On a bike I am at the helm at it realy doesn;t bother me to bad.

I recall riding from Purgatory, Colorado to Silverton over Coal Bank and Molas passes a couple years ago. The Million Dollar Highawy is very twisty. I think I must have averaged 70 on the trek and hit speeds of 85 ...running 50-60 in the hairpins of that road the enitire 30 miles. I never felt ill at all. Only the exhilaration of ridng the edge and knowing one false move would have me and Zilla plummeting into the Animas River gorge 500 feet below.

I gotta take that road on the Flying Kaw someday.

                Hey Max,
Yeah, I, too, don't do well on small boats, or even big boats/ships that are rockin' n rollin' !

IF you were able to do 50-60mph thru a hairpin turn, then it doesn't sound like they were very tight turns? The ones in N.C. and local area are 10-15mph hairpins for sure!

                  Back to mpg

                  Hi ladies and lads,

returning to the subject of mpgs: I am happy to report that after adjusting my carb float levels to spec, my 1980 XS1100SG improved in mileage from 33mpg to a whopping 41mpg.
Now that is dramatic ,or what?
The bike, which I just bought in Chicago with only 9800 miles on it, had been doctored on apparently, by some tech wannabes.
The floats had been out by nearly an 1/8 of and inch on the rich side.
Needless to say, I am thrilled with this improvement.....
Now once the 850 FD goes on, I should be able to be as easy on gas as my daughters VW Golf, while still being wikedly fast.
Cheers to all, green, red , with polkadots and otherwise.

                    whopping 41mpg.
Only time I can get that kinda economy is curising 45/55 mph with no stop n go... If you get that kinda milege around town with regular XSive riding....bet your running lean.

latest addiction, My 79' very special Special is getting 37 MPG which is a little better than my standards, 32 to 34 MPG.

Ride the new special like the little ole lady tho... Don't get XSive on it, thats what the others are for anyway

                      Hi MRO,
not necessarily. Remember that Jurgen is buying his gas by the appallingly expensive litre in British Columbia. So I reckon what he's getting is around 8 litres per 100 kilometers and what he's translating it into is 41 miles per Imperial gallon. Divide that by 1.2 to get miles per American gallon and he's getting 34mpg compared to the 27.5mpg he was getting before he adjusted his float heights.

They are indeed hairpins (180 degrees plus) but the radius of the turn is not super tight. However you'd be a fool to take one of these curves in a passenger car at 50. On a bike it's tricky but safe.

At Hallett the hairpin in turn 10 would likely be marked 20 or 25 mph. On my ZRX I usually tackle that one about 55 or 60. My knee will tap the asphalt maybe once. However...the really good riders pucks are literally smoking when they exit that curve in XS of 70!

MRO - Don't do that too often. But occassionally the temptation is just too much. Especially if I'm by myself or a small group. I wil not do that at a rally or with large groups. It too tricky...and besides if I busted my azz Tod would never let me live it down.
