The 16" to 17" is not a bolt-in swap. There are differences in the rear brake torque bracket plus a few other issues. Most of the details were hashed out in this thread:

Is doable with a few extra parts from the 17" doner bike and a few washers to use as spacers.

Well, with the final drive mod completed, I am getting about 41 to 42 MPG, up from a regular 34. Oddly enough switching to the earlier cams did not improve my mileage, but that was not really the goal. I should switch back to the XJ cams to look for any variance. I did have other issues (no lubrication of the splines - thanks mr. mechanic!) so that might have influenced my rather large increase in mileage.

I he has a standard then he alread has a 17". But the wheel swap is no quite plug in play. There are spacers and brackets that have to be changed. I've not done it but several have and will confirm this.

The wheel swap is a nice loss in rev of (like you said) 6%. But the FD mod doubles that reduction.

Ray is really dropping his revs. He did a FD mod on his 78E. SO he has the taller gearing AND taller tire. Last I spoke to him he loves it.

And I probably will STILL love it, once I can ride it again. The company would rather I rent a car than ship my bike to France! I've been here for almost three weeks now, and boy to I need to ride.

But suffice to say...I've been an earth scientist for a quarter century. I've been a student of said science for about 30 years.

The idea that man is significantly affecting global climate is not only questionable it's patently absurd. If man is significantly affecting the climate today then what warmed the planet 25,000 years ago at the end of the great ice age and push the permanent ice from Texas back into Canada? Was it cro-magnon drivng around in SUVs?

If man is causing this little blip on the warming radar today of 1 degree...the what caused teh radical warming of 10 degrees 45 million years ago during the mid tertiary period that gave rise to a sub-tropical forest at the north pole ripe with alligators? If you didn't know champosaurus is NOT a warm water critter. He was found in the fossil forest of Axel Heiberg Island. Google it.

And what has caused the earth to cycle warm and cold for at least 541 million years. That's right Jurgen 541 MILLION.

When people talk about the insane notion that the earth is hotter than it;s been in 600,000 years I say SO WHAT? that is a mere one thousandth of sedimentary history. These idiots are looking at global climatic cycles through a microscope!!! Instead they should be looking at it through a telescope!

But this is WAY OT.

If you would like to be educated further please PM me. I would gladly take a little extra time to show you the other side of the story. The side that most scientists that I practice subscribe to. Not this Al Gore hyped hysteria that totally ignores the well established geologic facts of earth's history. A history that is indelibly recorded in the rock.

So for man to run around screaming "Oh my god!!! The sky is falling...if we only quit LIVING then the earth will cool down!!!"...this is about as logical and reasonable as screaming" The volcanoe gods are angry...throw another virgin in the caldera!"

This line of reason...if that is what you could call it...is steeped in hysteria and totally defies scientific reason and irrefutable facts fo earth's history.

Jurg - If you are convinced that the XSive burning of hydrocarbons is the sole cause of planetary warming then I highly recommend this 750 FD mod.

If all XSives subscribed to this mod we might be able to slow the warming by .00002367896 degrees C within a thousand years from the fuel savings alone! But better yet is the $$$ savings on my next road trip to the Golden State!

Back on topic. Now that I've logged 1200 miles on it in the last two weeks I'm averaging 37MPG naked. And I'm skip shifting 2nd as it's going bad. And thats running 75-80 on the freeway. Also has been jetted with the Supertrapp 4into1

I-75 in Michigan I'll pass at 70 I'd be roadkill. I do have the 1 dollar xs750 Final drive to put in it. Maybe over the weekend.

Now that I have read the 750 mod in detail, it really is a non-brainer. I'll find one of those hubs and get it on there asap.

Maximan, while I could not disagree more with you on your stance toward the ecosystem, I do really appreciate your help with my milage question.

I was born in industrialized Germany, amongst steel mills, coal mines and chemical factories in the 60's before pollution was taken seriously, and I saw people literally choking in the streets. I will not be part off that problem if I can help it.

BTW...I am as concerned about the ecosystem as anyone. This is indigenous to being an earth scientist. However as a scientist I refuse to worship any "THING" inclusing the earth. I see far to many people get all emotional about issues that need only calm logical thought. Not hysteria.
