  • clip-ons on an XJ

Anybody ever tried this, anyone have pics? I have never seen a set close up, but I am guessing that they could clip directly to the stock posts on an XJ, barring any clearance issues. I really like the stock bars with their adjustability, but I would like to have a different look and feel to it.

I've never looked that close at an XJ but You'd have to remove the headlight ears (and mounts). Then an aftermarket headlight mount (really no problem there.

Just get some clubman bars, they only sit a bit higher than actual clip-ons and look pretty neat. Then you don't have to get custom mounts for your headlight and whatnot. Unless you want to.

I've got some clubman bars I got from Old Bike Barn that work fairly well and I like them.

Clubmans wont work on an XJ, They don't use the usual one-piece tube. It's 2 pieces and are square.

          XJ bars

Ebay link to stock bars. They do clip on to posts , I am just not sure if they would fit a set of other clip ons. I will try to post pics tonight of the posts.

Oh, sorry. I didn't know that. I guess I'll shut up and quietly exit.

Clubmans are a good way to go though, when you can, to se if you like the position. I had some on my Honda Hawk and I liked them a lot but I was never entirely comfortable with a welded bar. After a year I switched to clip-ons.
This is one reason I swapped the buckhorn bars on my LG with superbike bars.

What did you use for headlight mounts with your clipons?

I've never seen clip-ons on an XJ, but Denny Zander runs them on one of his bikes .

                    Don't clip his ears!

                    Hey Ken,

Looking at the FICHE for the XJ's steering components, the handlebar holders look like 2 cylinders that the clip ons could possibly bolt/clamp onto, just not sure how wide they are?

And if not being able to use those, he should be able to bolt something onto the upper triple tree where those lower clamps would go that would be big enough to fit the clip on bars!?

Or would this location not be wide enough to provide the proper leverage? I reckon clip ons are supposed to be onto the upper fork tubes!? Just thought this might be another option that wouldn't involve messing with the headlight ears and such!?

Attaching clip-ons to the fork tubes between the triple clamps does not work very will on an XS and probably not any better on an XJ.

The big problem is they will hit the tank. You will only be able to make 50' radius turns. Even with my clip-ons attached to tubes 3 1/2" above the top clamp, my turning radius is limited a bit. I can still turn around on a two lane road. I am totally satisfied with the riding position.

                        What!!!

I am trying to help in this situation with the handle bars but every resource I have, even the Yamaha factory site does not have a listing for a 1984 xj1100.

                          FJ parts

Will the bars from a FJ1100 fit they look similar to clip-ons. I don't know if they will mount the same. Here is link to what a stock FJ1100 bars look like.
Here's the top Triple Tree, but it doesn't show much about how the bars fit into it!?

                            I don't know

The link to bike bandit will not work. Don't know why!! I looked at a 84 fj100 stock bars and they looked similar, but a lower rise don't know if they would fit for sure!!!

Sorry about the massive photos linked to BB!

Uh, duh, I now see that these are also clip ons, but apparently the FJ is designed with longer upper fork tubes that stick up beyond the upper triple tree, and these just clamp on to them!

                              Hey EXcess11,
The Yamaha site is only for US models, and the XJ11 stopped in 82, so that's why you can't find the Canadian 84XJ!

I still like the idea of mounting the clip ons to the handlebar posts in the triple tree, either buy bolting some metal Pipe of the required diameter that they can clip/bolt onto!
