  • Broken Crank ???

This is a post I coppied from a different message board. Has anyone ever heard of XS1100 cranks breaking. this was news to me!
excess be careful with that bike. The cranks were known to break. It takes some hot-rodding around to do it. Two guys I work with both had XS11's, both broke the cranks. Different time spans of course. One guy's bike had a header on it, the other was basically stock. I've ridden them and they run strong. Not sure why the cranks break. Most likely small journals or something along that line. I don't think it's an oiling problem. Just ride it like a cruiser, don't turn it into a racer and you'll be fine. Cool looking paint work. If I had one, I'd still put a header on in and act like a bad ass but wouldn't treat it like a dirt bike if you know what I mean....
Is this a problem with Xs1100 or is this person off his rocker!!!

For the last 16 years I've been around a bike that has gone thru 3 transmissions due to thrashing, and never once has anything ever gone wrong with the crank.

Only if you drop em off the work bench. I have NEVER heard of 11's having a weak crank problem. These things have been hot-rodded so many different ways and they still hang tough. Must have the XS mixed up with a V65.

Back in the early days of the XS1100, one drag racer ran ALL YEAR on his STOCK crank. No they don't break. I think I need some of the drugs he was on.

I think the phrase is "xs11's are bullet proof " applies to the crank as well never heard of one failing

            just maybe .....
the overflowing carbs (due to bad petcocks, seats, floats, etc) were never fixed AND they never changed the oil? but I would suspect that problems would develop on the top end before the crank broke.

Only saw one broken crank so far.... on a suzuki GSX750.... or was it GSXR.... something early 90s. Broke in half down the counterweight. The guy was doing a wheelie and when the front came down something went pop and it wouldnt wheelie so good anymore....

Maybe he is thinking fo a different bike. Someone on the kz site said something about breaking cranks after high compression big bore kits were added...

                  Not Likely

There are very few components on the XS11 that have the propensity for breakage....very few. The last of these would be anything to do with the bottom end. The crankshaft on these bikes are automotive style and are virtually indestructable.

If you ran the engine out of oil or flooded the crankcase with gasoline you still wouldn't "break" the crankshaft. You might score the journals so bad that it couldn't easily be rebuilt. You might fry a main bearing ... but break the crank?...not likely on an XS11.

Wrist pin...maybe...connecting rod....likely if over revved or having a bad rod bearing. But I just can't see a crankshaft breaking on one of these over built monsters.
