vacuum advance hose

How taut is the vacuum advance hose supposed to be? Mine just barely reaches the #2 carb and is stretched/bent over the port like it might restrict airflow. I guess I should just replace it but didn't know how much extra hose would be appropriate.

Well, you certianly don't want it tight. That promotes kinks or cracks.

Just get enough to route it out of the way and have an inch or so slack...you don't want too much either as it can kink due to the heat.

Yeah, is it supposed to go up and over the intakes or under and between? It wasn't connected when I bought the bike and I don't recall seeing a diagrahm for it. I couldn't find any vacuum hose that was small enough to fit through the engine case so I guess it'll have to be enlarged.

Get an inline barbed fitting and 'splice' on a new end (XStended length) at the carb end.

engine ==old hose==<barbed fitting>==new hose== #2 carb nipple

barbed connector...didn't think of that. I'll have to get one of those...

Try a commercial lawn mower repair shop. Generally have all kinds of hoses to fit everything from little air cooled weed whackers on up.

I've never had a problem getting the right size hose at NAPA or other local auto parts stores.

The hose is 3/16". Can be found at any auto parts store.

The outside diameter of the 3/16" hose at the auto parts stores in my area is about twice the size of the hole in the engine that it is supposed to go through. I might check out a small engine shop...as mro suggests.

Make sure you are looking at vacum hoses. Some of the fuel lines might work, but they are usually a lot larger outside diameter. I seem to remember the 1/8 will sometimes fit, depending on the hose manufacturer.

For what it's worth Honda uses the same size hose on their vacuume petcocks. I had some left over from replacing the advance hose on my bike and I used it on a customer's GL500.

Hmmm...and here I sold my old cx500 to a friend...he wouldn't miss those lines would he... ;-)
