  • Driveshaft/Final Drive repair

    Hi Folks--

I finally found some time to tear into my bike to see if I could figure out what caused it to break down. Good news...it's NOT the tranny!! Bad news...it IS the driveshaft/final drive. The area where the driveshaft meets the input to the final drive was COMPLETELY dry, and the splines had worn to the point of total slippage. The area where the grease is put in at the fitting was fine. How can I make sure that I don't have that problem any more? Speaking of lubrication, where can I get info about proper lubricants and capacities for the whole bike? Is there a way to flush out the middle gear assembly on the bike? Any help is greatly appreciated. I haven't been able to ride since October, and it's making me kinda crazy.

    Mike,

Unforunately you learned the hard way that the grease fitting is so poorly positioned that the grease never gets to where it's needed. The only way to grease that shaft is to take the final drive off and grease it manually. I do this every season, some guys do it every two, depends on your usage, i guess.

        Mike,
First, get the parts from Andreas. I've bought a tranny from him, and I'm very happy with it. You NEED a Clymers for the XS1100. They are still in print, and can be had for about $25 at a good shop or book store.
I grease the splines by hand at every rear tire change. This is about every 8 months for me, but I put a LOT of miles on Daily Ride. I use Red Line synthetic gear lube for the middle and final drive, and Mobil one or Red Line synthetic grease for the splines. Change the middle and final once a year, and you should be able to go a long time on the bearings.
The middle drive has a drain plug, 19mm, on the bottom. It is way up in the back, on the underside of the middle gear box. The book will show the position, and tell you how much lube to put in.
