  • Engine Seal

I have done a search on this, but I was wondering if anyone out there has replaced the seal on the right side of the case under the alternator without splitting the case. I have an XJ... but the motor is off of a 78 XS. I just got this bike back together and DO NOT want to go into it again at this point. I thought it might be the galley plug... but no such luck. I thought about buying a few of these seals and trying to just tap/ ease them in... can it be done? The extra money for the seals is MORE than worth it to me if it keeps me from splitting cases. I would rather go through 10 seals than have to tear this thing down again. I have done several axle seals, and tranny seals on vehicles... same type of thing it seems to me. What do you think?

It can be done with out splitting the case. I bought the right side seal from bikebandit, and replaced it when I had the engine apart, but the new seal doesn't have the outer lip on it, so it can be tapped into place. The old seal may have an outer lip, so it may have to be carefully pried out of the bore with a screwdriver. You should have been able to find this info with a search, as it was just discussed here a month or so ago. Be sure to lube the crank and the new seal before assembly.

AH-HA! i finally get to impart some of MY (miniscule)knowledge on you guys! I did the left side seal a month or so back, and that side had the outer lip that made it a bear to get out(no case splitting), but can be replaced with a generic press in seal. I seem to recall the guy at yamaha saying the right side had no lip, so i'm hoping its gonna be a simple swap. let me know how it goes, i'm gonna be doing the same here in a week or so. ps-do a search for 'left side crank seal' on this forum and u should find the thread.

I tried a couple different ways to search this and found a few, but most of them were saying you HAD to split the cases. I only saw one guy that said it could be done... but buy several of them. We have a little local shop that has been around a loooong time and has about every size and type of seal or bearing that has ever been made I think. I am going to try to get this seal out without too much gusto, and see if he can match it up with something that doesn't say "Bike" or "Yamaha" on it. As crappy as the galley plug was.. (Broke the "Tit" off of it trying to pull it out.. had to drill, thread, and yank it out... even tried running the motor hoping it would push it out), I am hoping this is a little better.

I will check my vent tube tomorrow as well.. it has been stuffed and tucked around several times with the carbs being in and out so much.
I emailed TC yesterday and told him about my oil getting darker faster than normal. I recently switched to Rotella. I read in here tonight somewhere about Rotella being very good at removing carbon and sludge, and that for the first few oil changes, people had this problem. I think it may have worked too good... cleaned around this seal, and now leaks. Oh well... I will replace a seal if it means my engine is running cleaner. So far, I have no gripes. The clutches were slipping a bit on Havoline Motorcycle oil. I read up on different oils, and saw a lot of good things about the Rotella-T. Also... for 6 bucks and change a gallon at Wally World.. who can complain. My engine sounds great now and the clutches slip far less... but I have noticed on very hard acceleration in 1st, that it has started skipping. 1st and 2nd gear fix is in my future I think... going to ride easy this summer and wait until next fall though. Tired of working on it... wanna just ride it a while.
Sorry... went off the original subject.. and not trying to start an oil link here... just a possible cause to my new leak.
