to add a ick starter do I need both of the gear shafts shown or just the circled one?

I've read on here that adding the kickstart components it a PITA.
My E alrady has the stub sticking out. I was going to add one from a 750 but it hits on the sidecover.
A kickstarter (for these bikes) is only useful if the starter motor goes bad. If the battery dies the kickstarter won't start it (system need 10 volts or something like that).
That said, it is still cool to kick-start the bike when others are watching.
Had a HD guy putting my bike down. I replied with "Real bikes are kick-started" and kicked my 400 Honda and rode off. His "Ol Lady" was laughing at him.

I have a little rubber boot sticking out from my 79. Does that mean I can just find a lever, attach it, and have a kick starter?

Yeah, the 79 had a kick starter. The lever is bolted to the frame, behind the engine. Is yours still there? Like it was mentioned before, the kick start lever from an XS750 will fit the splines, but when it is folded in it may hit the side cover.

On my 78, the slines are positioned differently than the kickstart lever for the 750. I posted an illistration a few months ago, and the response I got was to just grind down the side where the bolt threads through. It worked easy enough, and now I can kickstart my 1100. Not to be pushy, but having read all of this thread and the one Street Rat pointed out, no one has actually anwered my question... I know someone knows, because in the previously refered to thread, Laxlad asked,

laxdad, That's the whole mechanism.
In addition to the lever, you'll also need the seal that fits into the clutch cover ( to replace the plug ).

The problem is that that link is no good now as ebay only hangs on to the listing pages for 90 days, or something.

I already have the part I circled, do I need the other, or is it already in there?

Okay, after a little research, I've got some good news, and some bad news.

The good news is that the parts you already have acquired that are circled in your diagram are the only parts you need to get! The other parts are part of the regular starter system, they are the shaft and gears that the starter motor drive, the kick starter drive just engages on the OTHER side of the shaft/gear.

The bad news is that you are probably going to have to split the cases to install it.....but I'm not positive, but pretty sure though! Others that have a kick starter and have split their cases to perform work can verify this for you!

.. that would be a big fat YES to splitting the cases to install those parts.. i have done it on a drag bike i assembled a few years ago, A 1980 1100 special ..while i was in there i removed the starter clutches and gears and the electric starter. along with a smaller battery, that shaved a lot of weight off the bike.. i pluged the starter hole with an expandable rubber freeze plug i purchased from the auto parts store. i also sat around for two days striping the wireing harness of all the wires that didnt have anything to do with keeping the head light, tail light and motor running.. i got a little XSive with that project
