  • Low fuel light

    I'm putting the fuel tank on the special for the first time . The PO had cleaned and sealed it so when I got the bike the tank was apart, no fuel valves installed and the sending unit plate was also off. Cleaned the mating surfaces, installed the plate and rebuilt the fuel valves. The tank is bone dry so when I hook up the connection to the low level light I expected to see the light come on. It didn't. Jumped the connection on the bike side and it lights up. Messured the resistance across the sender and it reads 1.79 ohms. Bad sender? Searched the site but came up empty. Wireing diagram in manual is no help. Nothing should work if its wired like it shows. Ideas?

    My Clymers manual says to remove the sender from the tank, and test the green and black wires at the sender, not at the plug. With the ohmmeter on the Rx100 scale, it should read 1500 plus or minus 100 ohms @77 degrees F

      I can't give you the specs, but once I... no wait... it was someone else, not me... uhmm.. someone put the fuel sending unit in the tank upside down-facing the wrong way. Took me... I mean him... a while to figure out why the tank read full on empty and empty on full. Don't know if it's possable to do on a Special, but it is on a Standard. May explain why the light didn't go on with an empty tank.

        Hey Prom,

        The Special's only have an ON/OFF type sender(idiot lite), no rising float mechanism to get turned upside down. It's a rheostat type "I think", and as long as the fuel covers up the coils, they stay cool, but once the fuel gets low, the coils are exposed, allowing them to heat up. This heat bends a ?tang? that makes contact sending the signal to the "Lite" giving you the......

          The fuel light sensor is slow to respond too...if your just clicking the bike on and expecting to see it, then turning it off cause it's not on...

          It may take it a minute or two...
